Serhii Bohachuk has volunteered to be the next challenger for WBC and WBO junior middleweight champion Sebastian Fundora for his next fight in March. Fundora (21-1-1, 13 KOs) saw two of his next fight options rejected by the World Boxing Organization last week.
Initially, Fundora planned to defend against Errol Spence (28-1, 22 KOs), but the WBO decided not to sanction the fight. Their reasons were that Spence had not fought for 1.5 years. after the loss, he never fought at 154, and was not ranked in the top 15 by the WBO.
Fundora’s team reportedly wanted to use Joey Spencer (19-1, 11 KOs), but he wasn’t ranked in the top 15 either, so he wasn’t a good opponent either.
Former WBC 154lb interim champion Bohachuk is ranked No. 8 by the WBO, which would make him the perfect opponent for Fundora in his March 30 fight. The only problem is that the management of Fundora may not want to use Bohachuk (25-2, 24 KO), because he is dangerous.
Although Fundora proved last year in Team Tszyu that he can beat the killer, it is a different story with Bohachuk. He’s not someone who loads up on individual shots like Tszyu. He consistently lands heavy punches in the same way that Artur Beterbiev does, and he’s good at fighting on the inside. He can generate a lot of power from within. Tszyu could not do that.
If Team Fundora wants to work their way down the WBO’s top 15 contenders list, they may not be happy to see Sebastian fight someone like Charles Conwell or Xander Zayas. It’s two fights, as it would be if he fought Bohachuk.
If Fundora thinks he is ready for it, he should fight Bohachuk because he is free and volunteers to fight him. That’s half the battle.
Sebastian let’s fight in la
