It remains unclear whether TikTok will still be available in the United States on Sunday, with the company saying that outgoing President Joe Biden’s administration must provide “certain” assurances that it will not be banned.
On Friday, The Supreme Court upheld the law which would effectively ban TikTok in the US if owner ByteDance doesn’t sell. With the sale not happening in the two days before the law goes into effect (and ByteDance’s repeated efforts to sell it), it seems that TikTok will disappear from the app stores on Sunday, January 19.
Reports have shown that it can be done again complete resignation since US companies will be prohibited from providing services that help distribute, maintain, or update the software.
January 19 is, however, one day before the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump, and the incoming president was. asked the Supreme Court delaying the ban so that they can “negotiate a decision to save the platform.”
Although the court did not approve the delay, the Biden administration also appeared to want to leave the fate of TikTok in Trump’s hands. In information on Friday, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Biden’s position has not changed – that “TikTok should remain available to the American public, but it is American ownership or other ownership that affects national security as identified by Congress.” However, given the time frame, Mr. Jean-Pierre said “actions to comply with this law should fall to the next Administration.”
Similarly, Department of Justice document from Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco said “the next phase of the process – implementing and ensuring that the law goes into effect on January 19 – will be a process that will take place over time.”
TikTok, however, He answered with his own voice saying that this was not enough for the company and other sponsors to continue providing the TikTok app. In TikTok’s opinion, Mr. Biden and the DOJ “failed to provide clarity and assurance to service providers that is critical to making TikTok available to more than 170 million Americans.”
The company added, “Unless the Biden Administration issues a definitive statement to satisfy the most critical service providers to ensure non-enforcement, TikTok will unfortunately be forced to go dark on January 19.”
Following the comments of TikTok, Jean-Pierre described the company’s claims as “absurd,” and said the administration sees “no need for TikTok or other companies to take action in the coming days before the Trump administration takes office on Monday.”
