Katie Drummond, WIRED’s international director, started our conversation this time, telling us how her father was recently approached by an accuser who tried to trick him with a voice that sounded like his. Fortunately no money was lost this time, but it’s a stark reminder that AI-driven fraud isn’t a future problem, but an issue worth thinking about right now. To protect yourself and your loved ones, you may want to set a password which you can use to confirm each other on the phone, in an emergency.
We were also contacted by Andrew Couts, WIRED’s senior editor who focuses on security and investigative reporting. Couts shared his insights into the various methods used by fraudsters, including how various groups are now using AI tools to dig into fake videos and trick people into making money. He reminded viewers to watch out for technical tactics often used by criminals, such as creating urgency or urging you not to tell anyone about it. You can learn more about AI scam calls Here.
During the live event, I talked about my recent research AI financial advisors and how it reminded me not to be suspicious of startups who claim to be financially supported. Instead of using my bank details to help me with my finances, the AI advisors seemed to want me to take out high-payout loans or high-interest loans.
