Americans’ view of the quality of health care in the United States is at a 24-year low, according to a new survey.
The Gallup pollreleased Friday, shows that 33 percent of American adults said the quality of American health care is excellent and 11 percent said it is good. This 44% represents a drop of 10% compared to 2020.
Another 38 percent of respondents said quality of health care was “fair,” while 16 percent gave it a “poor” rating.
Health coverage scored even worse than quality of care, according to the survey. Only 28 percent of American adults said the coverage was “excellent” or “good,” according to the survey. That’s a 12-point decline from a 2012 survey, when Americans’ view of the quality of coverage was at its highest, garnering nearly 41 percent support.
Republicans and GOP-leaning independents have maintained a negative view of US health care since President-elect Trump left the Oval Office in 2021. The number, however, has been relatively consistent among Democrats and independents of democratic tendency in the same period. according to the survey.
About 42 percent of Republicans view the quality of health care as excellent or good, a drop of more than 25 points from 68 percent in 2020. Democrats were apparently more optimistic about health care in 2024, with 50% rating it favorably, according to the poll.
Both sides of the aisle are dissatisfied with health care coverage, the poll shows, with just 0 percent of Democrats and 25 percent of Republicans giving a positive rating.
Only 19 percent of respondents said they were satisfied health care cost. That number remained relatively unchanged from 2023. The rating peaked at 30 percent in 2020, Gallup noted.
Respondents also tagged high costs as the most pressing health issue facing the nation, with 23% saying so. Access to health care i addressing obesity they followed behind, with 14 percent and 13 percent, respectively, identifying the issues as important, according to the survey.
The Gallup poll was conducted Nov. 6-20 among 1,001 adults and has a margin of error of 4 percentage points.
