India and Vidarbha batsman Karun Nair is in really good form in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy (India’s domestic 50-over tournament). Nair currently has an incredible average of 752 in the tournament and has been dismissed only once.
His consistency prompted the national team selectors to include him in the Indian squad for the Champions Trophy. However, former Indian cricketer Dinesh Karthik has a different opinion and feels that the Champions Trophy squad is almost ready.
During a segment on Cricbuzz, Dinesh Karthik shed light on Karun Nair’s recent batting form in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and was very impressed with him. However, he feels that India’s ODI squad is almost ready and will not undergo any surprise changes, thus ruling out the possibility of Nair’s inclusion.
“Karun Nair, it was unreal to see the form you were in. Even Mayank Agarwal was in really good form. But the beauty is that it comes at a stage when India’s ODI set-up is almost ready to go. There can’t be too many changes,” said Karthik.
Karthik feels that Nair has prompted the selectors to consider him for the Champions Trophy. However, he did not rule out that possibility considering that he is an excellent player of both pace and spin.
“Yes, it’s very tempting to bring Karun Nair into the lineup, and I think he’s earned the right to be in the talks. But I don’t think they will make it to the Champions Trophy squad,” Karthik remarked.
“But if he continues like this, why not? Such an in-form striker who plays fast and turns well, he is a good player and I am very happy for him,” he added.
Karun Nair has so far scored 752 runs in seven innings at an average of 752 and an incredible strike rate of 125.96. In eight matches, he scored five hundreds and one fifty.
In the only innings when he did not score 50, he scored an unbeaten 44 against Chhattisgarh. It is also his weakest result of the season so far. He recently scored 88 off just 44 balls in the semi-final against Maharashtra to lead Vidarbha to the final.
Vidarbha will now face Karnataka, Nair’s former home team, in the final. Karun Nair looked extremely fluent throughout the tournament against pacers and spinners. He used all his experience and made a strong case to be a part of India’s Champions Trophy squad.
India will begin their 2025 Champions Trophy campaign against Bangladesh on February 19 in Dubai. The men in blue will then face Pakistan in a high-voltage clash on February 23 at the same ground.
India will play the final match against New Zealand on March 2. India will play all their matches in Dubai in the tournament which is being held in a hybrid model. Indian government did not allow BCCI to send its team to Pakistan.
