Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel is rejecting four high-profile requests before the agency before she leaves office, saying the action is necessary to protect the First Amendment.
In a statement Thursday, Rosenworcel said the FCC would dismiss complaints and petitions from various groups “that seek to curtail press freedom and undermine the First Amendment.”
Two of the complaints came from a conservative group against CBS news on how to 60 minute interview with Vice President Harris was edited and another against NBC during a debate in equal time between Harris and President-elect Trump following his appearance on Saturday Night Live before the election. a third came against ABC on how it conducted a presidential debate between the two candidates.
The fourth complaint comes from a former Fox executive who argued that a Fox-owned television network should lose its broadcast license for coverage of the 2020 election.
“The facts and legal circumstances in each of these cases are different,” Rosenworcel said. “But what they share is that they seek to arm the FCC’s licensing authority in a way that is fundamentally at odds with the First Amendment.”
“Doing so would set a dangerous precedent. That’s why we reject it here,” he added.
