Tottenham players cannot implement Postecoglou’s tactics, says Lennon

Aaron Lennon believes Tottenham’s players are unable to execute Ange Postecoglou’s high-tempo philosophy.

Last night’s 2-1 north London derby defeat at Arsenal means Spurs have won just one of their last nine Premier League games.

They sit 13th in the table with pressure starting to mount Postecoglou, who described their form as “unacceptable”.

The Australian has said he won’t change his style despite a tough injury list, but Lennon says something has to give.

The former Spurs winger told the Football Daily Podcast: “It’s a big problem, I think the team looked really sad (against Arsenal). The team is burdened with injuries, but that is a big problem.

“His way is fast pace for 95 minutes, (but) the Spurs players don’t look like they can keep up this pace. It’s a huge problem, one win out of nine, that’s just not good enough.

“I think Arsenal was the better team. I don’t think there was much, but Arsenal thoroughly deserved to win. But this is bringing a lot of unrest into the camp now, if they weren’t in the semi-finals of the EFL Cup I think there would be big problems.”

Lennon urges Spurs to step up

Lennon thinks injuries have blighted Spurs’ season and says they need to step up in January to avoid being dragged into a relegation battle.

He added: “It (injuries) is 100 per cent a big factor. You are not talking about one or two side players here, but your core players. You’re talking about your number one goalkeeper, you’re talking about your two centre-halves, (Destiny) Udogie out, three of the back four are out, including your keeper.

“It would affect any team, the lads who came in were brilliant. (Grandpa) Spence looked really good, I’m surprised he hasn’t played more football seeing how good he’s been over the past few weeks. It will now be interesting to see if Spurs will look to strengthen their squad in this January window.

“They need a cover in the back, they showed they don’t have a cover there. Archie Gray was a substitute, he is not a centre-half, not even a right-back. I think they will look to cover the center half and maybe even another striker.

“During the season, they showed that the team needs to be strengthened.”

Next up for Tottenham is a trip to Goodison Park to face Everton on Sunday.
