Jasprit Bumrah ordered to rest as BCCI blocks his return

Latest update on Jasprit Bumrah has raised serious concerns about his availability for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025. He sustained a back spasm after being over-thrown in Australia during the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25.

Jasprit Bumrah is currently under medical supervision after being advised to rest at home. After a grueling Test tour of Australia, India’s leading paceman returned home last week, but his condition remains alarming due to swelling in his back.

Jasprit Bumrah under medical observation, participation in ICC Champions Trophy 2025 remains uncertain

Sources revealed that Bumrah is expected to report to the Board of Control for Cricket in India India(BCCI) Center of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru. But it is not clear when he will visit the Center of Excellence (CoE), jeopardizing his participation in the 2025 Champions Trophy.

However, Jasprit Bumrah is likely to visit the Center of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru next week, but it depends entirely on his progress. Sources further revealed that the medical experts have asked Bumrah to rest so that the swelling subsides so that they can determine the next steps for his recovery and treatment.

For now, the focus is on getting the Indian pacer’s back muscles to fully recover and the swelling to subside before any further decisions are made regarding his fitness and future plans. However, if there is only swelling, then Bumrah could be available for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

Jasprit Bumrah could go to Council of Europe next week: report

A source close to the development was quoted by the Times of India as saying, “Bumrah may go to the CoE next week, but there is no fixed date yet as of now. He was advised to rest at home to allow the muscles to recover and the swelling to subside. Once that is done, the future course of action will be determined.”

With Bumrah currently struggling with back swelling, Team India’s main pacer will not be in any rush to return to action. Given his history of back problems, the BCCI has been cautioned against forcing him back onto the cricket field.

It said the exact cause of the swelling is still unclear, but if it is more serious than expected, his recovery could take longer and he could miss the upcoming 2025 Champions Trophy to be held in Pakistan and Dubai.

BCCI faces a tough decision as Jasprit Bumrah struggles with swelling

The source further noted, “Bed rest doesn’t sound good. I hope it’s not a bulging disc or higher grade muscle swelling. There must be a similar approach with him – to wrap him in cotton wool and preserve a talent like him.”

So, now the Indian cricket team management and selectors are hoping that Jasprit Bumrah’s back problem should be limited to swelling only, as the disc-related problem could further delay his return. With a packed calendar ahead, including Champions Trophy 2025, IPL 2025 and England’s tour of India, careful and patient management of the Indian pacer’s recovery is crucial.

India are yet to finalize their provisional squad for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025, as the national selectors await the report of the medical team before taking a call on Bumrah’s inclusion in the 15-man squad. They hope to get a clear picture in the next few days.
