Richard Sherman makes his feelings known about Baker Mayfield’s “petty” attitude

Former NFL cornerback Richard Sherman praised Baker Mayfield’s competitive edge, citing the quarterback’s “petty” nature as a positive trait. His comments mark a significant shift from their past clashes dating back to 2019.

During an appearance Thursday on Kay Adams’ “Up & Adams,” Sherman, a five-time Pro Bowler, expressed his appreciation for Mayfield’s competitive mindset. The timing of his comments coincides with Mayfield’s career renaissance in Tampa Bay.

“I love, I love the small stuff. I’m here for the small stuff,” Sherman said when asked by Adams if he appreciated the small quarterback.

He added that Mayfield would likely use their past as motivation, saying:

“I’m sure Baker knows the history and Baker is petty in that way. And I like that about him.”

Their relationship hit the headlines in October 2019 when Sherman accused Baker Mayfield to belittle him during the pre-game handshake. It was before the 49ers-Browns game. Mayfield was the QB for the Browns then. Although video evidence later contradicted Sherman’s initial claim, the incident showed their complicated dynamic.

Baker Mayfield’s approach to handling criticism has evolved significantly. Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, he revealed his departure from social media.

“I was taking a lot of notes and trying to prove people wrong, but that’s not the way to live,” Mayfield said.

The change paid off. Mayfield posted career bests in 2024, throwing for 4,500 yards and 41 touchdowns. His performance helped the Buccaneers secure back-to-back NFC South titles. He transformed himself from a nearly out of the league quarterback to signing a three-year, $100 million contract.

“You have to believe in yourself, you have to keep going, play for each other,” Mayfield said in a press conference.

Baker Mayfield’s focus is now on playoff success as the Buccaneers prepare to host the Commanders in their wild-card matchup.
