In a somewhat unexpected move, Trevoh Chalobah returns to Chelseawith his loan at Crystal Palace reportedly terminated.
That’s according to an update from The Athletic this morning, and Chalobah is expected to return and play a key role in Enzo Maresca’s side for the rest of the season.
Chalobah has had a mixed career at Stamford Bridge, playing regularly at times and producing good results, but also being completely out of the first-team picture at times.
A summer loan move to Palace made sense for Chalobah, but now it seems he is back and will play his part for the Blues in the second half of the season.
Writing in The Athletic, Liam Twomey describes Chalobah’s return as an ‘unexpected opportunity’ for the 25-year-old.
“This is the latest twist in a turbulent few months for Trevoh Chalobah, who had every reason to believe his Chelsea career was over when he joined Palace on a season-long loan in August,” Twomey wrote in the article.
“Chelsea made it absolutely clear last summer that he would not be in head coach Enzo Maresca’s plans for this season, leaving him out of the club’s squad for the pre-season tour, stripping him of his squad number and assigning him to train with the so-called ‘bomb squad’ “.
“Chalobah has responded by making a positive impact at Palace and the changing circumstances at Stamford Bridge have now presented him with an unexpected opportunity to re-establish his value to Chelsea in the absence of Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile through injury.”
It will be interesting to see what kind of impact Chalobah can make for CFC now, while Marco Guehi’s situation will also be one to watch.
Guehi was also considered by Chelsea while they were considering recalling Chalobah, and it remains to be seen if the citizens of West London will try to make both deals.
Palace would certainly not be willing to sell an important defender now that they are losing Chalobah’s presence in their squad.
