Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) said Saturday he was “optimistic” about the way forward for Pete Hegseth, President-elect Trump controversial choice to lead the Pentagon.
“I’m optimistic about it. I’ve spoken personally with several senators on the Hill over the last few days and it seems like the momentum is moving in the right direction,” Johnson. he said in an interview on “Fox & Friends Weekend,” adding, “We’ve all made mistakes in our lives, but we believe in redemption.”
“What Pete brings to the table is a love of the military, great training, great experience, I think he’s right for the job,” he told Hegseth’s former Fox News colleagues. “And it will shake up the status quo, which is why this election is so important.”
Johnson’s praise comes a day after Trump’s bent on his nomination of Hegseth amid questions about whetherallegations ofsexual misconduct andexcessive drinkingit could affect yourspossibility of being confirmed by the Senate The president, despite being a powerful ally of the president-elect, has no vote in the matter.
“Pete Hegseth is doing great. His support is strong and deep, much more so than the fake news would have you believe,” Trump said published on Social Truthcalling the former “Fox & Friends” host a “great student” with a “military mindset.”
Although there has been an increase in support over the past few days, Hegseth still faces one battle up. sources he signaled to The Hill Earlier this week, his chances could be blocked by a group of likely “non-hardliners” among Senate Republicans.

“I do it for the warriors, not the warmongers,” he wrote X social platform. “The left is afraid of disruptors and change agents. They are afraid of @realDonaldTrump, and me.”
“So they spread the word with fake, anonymous sources and BS stories. They don’t want the truth. Our warriors never back down, and neither do I,” Hegseth added.
The Army veteran’s attorney has done this as well threatened to sue for extortion against his client’s sexual assault accuser if Hegseth is not confirmed as Secretary of Defense.
