Federal meteorologists have issued their most severe wildfire warning for Los Angeles and Ventura counties as winds threaten to pick up early Tuesday into Wednesday.
The National Weather Service (NWS) is warning residents of a “particularly hazardous situation”Los Angeles branchdescribed an “extreme risk” and the need for “immediate action” in three sprawling areas that straddle those counties.
“Warning! Strong, locally damaging, NE/E winds will affect West LA Co. and much of Ventura Co through Wednesday,” forecasters.warned. “Critical fire weather is expected, so please have multiple ways to get notifications of new fires and prepare ahead of time.”
This is the first time the NWS Los Angeles branch has issued its ownthe most serious warningduring the current wave of wildfires, according to the Los Angeles Times.
As of Monday morning, three fires of 10 acres or more were burningfive fridays– although many smaller fires also dotted the greater Los Angeles metropolitan area.
- TheFire of Palisadesthat has decimated the Pacific Palisades neighborhood, began Tuesday morning and has now expanded to 23,713 acres. The fire is only 14 percent contained, according to Cal Fire.
- TheEaton Fireburning north of Pasadena, started Tuesday night and has grown to 14,117 acres, with 33 percent containment, a big improvement from Friday’s 3 percent.
- The 799 acresHurst Fireon fire in the San Fernando Valley, also started Tuesday night and is now 95 percent contained.
Both 395 acresLydia Firein the Angeles National Forest and the 1,052 acresKenneth Firenear the 101 Freeway in the West Hills region, was 100 percent contained Monday.
In a webinar Sunday, UCLA climatologist Daniel Swainexpressed concern “about the other fires that could break out in the region during wind events later this week.”
“The resources have been drawn,” Swain said. “Some of these resources are exhausted human beings who are doing very hard work on the ground.”
