Camera behavior

Camera customization and features are essential to get everything you need from a security camera. Advanced options like 2K and 130-degree field of view are the hallmarks of a good home security camera. It’s a bonus if the cameras can twist and tilt to capture additional areas. This goes hand-in-hand with the software version, which should enable easy, detailed live viewing on demand.

Character design

We prefer cameras with sturdy, compact constructions that can be mounted or placed in different positions for quick setup. The design can also add value to the camera — the ability to turn on a light or sound a siren can be very useful for home security. Similarly, the motion detection feature should be customizable, with options such as directions and privacy settings to reduce false alarms and motion sensitivity. You will need to adjust the settings until you get the information you want.

Wired versus wireless

Wired cameras don’t need to be recharged and are a bit cheaper, but they are limited in terms of installation and take more work outdoors. Wireless cameras are easy to install and avoid cable hassles, but you’ll need to recharge or replace the batteries, often after a few months or more. We prefer wireless cameras whenever possible, but wired cameras can be a useful choice, especially for models like doorbells that can connect to existing wires.

Audio

Smart home security cameras should offer two-way audio that allows for quick communication through the app. There is no two-way audio that works with Apple’s HomePod line, but it can work with other apps.

Object recognition

Object recognition is the ability to distinguish objects such as people, pets, cars and packages, and then send you personalized notifications or ignore other objects. It is very important for modern security cameras, but sometimes they are hidden behind registration.

Video storage

Video storage is not absolutely necessary, but we highly recommend the ability to save, download and share videos with each cam. Sometimes this is locked behind cloud storage subscriptions — like iCloud+ — but sometimes, you have a local storage option with a MicroSD card or similar setup. Local storage is expensive to set up, but it keeps you in the cloud and away from subscription fees if you want to avoid them.

Additional smart home support

Apple support is a must on our list, you may want cameras with additional home support, such as working with Alexa or Google Home. If you have an existing security system, look for a tool that can be integrated with your existing control panel or software.
