A drought across Southern California in early January 2025 led to deadly wildfires they burned many houses and other buildings in Los Angeles County.
Ming Panhydrologist at the University of California-San Diego’s Center for Western Weather and Water Extremesmanages the state’s water supply. He put the aridity of Southern California into perspective using charts and maps.
In early January, soil moisture in much of southern California was less than 2 percent of the records about that day in the community. It is very low.

The state receives very little rain from May to September, so a late fall and winter is necessary to fill dams and build snow to provide water. California depends in the Sierra snow about one-third of its fresh water.
However, Southern California started the 2024-25 water year very dry. The region received rain from the atmospheric river in November, but not much. After all, most of them atmospheric streams those that hit the West Coast from October to January moved north into Washington, Oregon, and Northern California.
When the air is warm and dry, to come out and steam also absorbs water from plants and soil. This leaves dry plants that can provide fuel flying torches spread wild fireas the Los Angeles area witnessed in early January.
