The mower doesn’t stop moderate change. According to both Axios and The New York Timesthe company is also pulling the plug on diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) services. These include eliminating diversity hiring targets, removing the role of chief diversity officer and de-prioritizing small businesses as retailers. The Times‘ report.
When asked to explain the termination of DEI’s efforts, Meta confirmed that his statement was correct.
In the process, the company appears to be implementing a decision to change the “legal and regulatory environment,” according to a memo to employees. Axios found.
“The United States Supreme Court recently issued rulings that signal changes in how courts can respond to DEI,” Janelle Gale, Meta’s VP of Human Resources said in a memo. “The term ‘DEI’ has also come under fire, in part because it is understood by some as a trend that shows a preference for certain groups over others.”
The present High Court is not really friendly a systematic effort to address issues of race, gender and sexuality, but judging by some of Meta’s recent changes, it seems there is more going on than the company’s fear of a potential lawsuit.
At the same time Mark Zuckerberg announced that Meta is abandoning third-party policy monitoring and changing the type of speech it allows on its platform, 404 Media Reports that the company removed the Trans and Non-binary themes from Messenger, and the articles that announced them. The company also added a Trump supporter and UFC CEO Dana White at his board this week, Zuckerberg’s affirmation of continued UFC fandom and a sign that he is willing to listen to conservative voices. All of this seems to add to the current climate’s decline and the way people in charge want to do business going forward.
