Democratic lawmakers remained remarkably silent after the ruling President-elect Donald Trump despite previously commenting on the cases against him, as Washington prepares for a Republican trifecta in Congress.
Trump was sentenced on Friday after being found guilty on 34 counts related to falsifying business records in May.
The the incoming president was convicted on unconditional discharge, which means you will not receive any jail time, fines or probation. The ruling also preserves Trump’s ability to appeal the conviction.
After Trump was found guilty in criminal court in May, Democratic members of Congress had a flurry of backlash on social media, but remained mum after Friday’s sentencing, which comes just days before he is sworn in position on January 20.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., wrote in May in a post on X, formerly Twitter, that “the jury has spoken and made a careful decision. Responsible leadership requires that the verdict,” while Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York said “no one is above the law.”
However, Democrats appeared less reactive to Friday’s ruling, which cleared Trump of any penalty.
A Democratic congresswoman issued a statement after the conditional discharge sentence, stating that “our justice system is not fair.”

“There is a two-tier system of justice in this country, and Donald Trump lives at the level where he reaches the White House without spending a single day in jail or parole after being convicted of 34 felonies. another level is the clients I represented as a public defender in Texas, like the seventeen-year-old boy who was on felony probation for taking candy from his school concession stand,” said Rep. Jasmine Crockett , D-Texas, in a post on X.

“The scales are not equal,” he added.
On the other hand, Republicans were very vocal after the ruling.
“I have no respect for the process being used in New York. I find the motives of the judge and the prosecutor to be laced with politics,” Sen. Lindsey Graham, RS.C., said in a statement. “This is a sad day for America.”

Trump, before the ruling, said he would appeal the decision.

Trump presented one emergency request Wednesday at the Supreme Court in an effort to avoid his Jan. 10 sentencing, but the high court ultimately denied his emergency petition to block his conviction.
