China hacked the US Treasury’s CFIUS, which reviews foreign investments that could threaten national security

Chinese hackers are said to have breached a key office in the US Treasury that is responsible for reviewing foreign businesses and activities that could threaten US national security.

CNN reportsciting US officials familiar with the incident, that Chinese hackers targeted the United States Foreign Trade Committee, or CFIUSwhich can approve or reject deals that could pose a threat to national security, such as corporate mergers and acquisitions or deals that involve US information.

Financial officials confirmed to TechCrunch last week that it was search for “a major cybersecurity event” following the breach of one of the security vendors, BeyondTrust. The Treasury Department said the hackers used a stolen BeyondTrust password to gain access to the department’s private network and documents. It was later revealed that Chinese hackers had also breached it office of the international financial sanctions departmentOffice of Foreign Assets Control, or OFAC.

The US cybersecurity agency CISA said this week that there was nothing to show that the hackers hacked every other US government department as part of the campaign.

Bloomberg reports that the hackers targeting the Treasury are known as Silk Typhoon (formerly known as “Hafnium”), a Chinese-run cybercriminal group known as doing mass to tear them to work the purpose of stealing things.

The cyberattack on the Treasury is the latest in recent months and has been linked to the Chinese-backed “Typhoon” hacker family. These cyberattacks include targeting the confidential communications of US government officials and embedding malicious software into critical US infrastructure to beat in the event of a future dispute between China and the United States.

The Chinese government has repeatedly denied the allegations.
