Republicans criticized ruling by President-elect Trump on Friday, calling it a “disgrace.”
Trump was sentenced Friday morning in New York City to the unconditional dismissal. He was convicted last year of falsifying business records after a research for years by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.

“What a joke and a disgrace,” Sen. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tennessee, wrote to X.
“This government witch hunt was an insult to the American people,” he added.
Rep. Rudy Yakym, R-Ind., also sounded off on the ruling, writing, “Today’s ruling is a sad reminder that Democrats will stop at nothing, including weaponizing the justice system to try to destroy the President Trump’s efforts have failed and will continue to fail in 10 days.

Despite Trump’s attempts to delay the ruling, it was brought forward by only 10 days before his inauguration.
The incoming president attended the proceedings virtually. “After careful analysis, this court determined that the only lawful sentence permitting entry of the judgment of conviction is an unconditional discharge,” Judge Juan Merchan said. “At this point, he imposes this sentence to cover all 34 charges.”
“President Trump’s sentencing today confirms what the American people have known all along: These trials have been pure political persecution. The American people overwhelmingly rejected an armed judiciary and politicized law . That ends Jan. 20,” said Rep. Jason Smith, R-Mo., on X.

Unconditional dismissal, as Merchan condemned Trump, imposes no punishment on the convicted individual. He maintains that the conviction remains. However, it means that the relevant penalties will not be imposed.
While Trump won’t face those sanctions because of the ruling, he could still face obstacles because of his felon status as long as the conviction stands.

Sen. Markwayne Mullin, R-Oklahoma, a top Trump ally, responded to the news, saying, “Finally, this farce of baseless New York liberal activists is over. It’s worth remembering: President Trump doesn’t have to do this job, he is doing it. To save America, we wait 10 days.
Sen. Bill Hagerty, R-Tenn., criticized the conviction and sentence as “a pathetic waste of taxpayer resources that should be used on real crimes that harm New Yorkers.”
