Frank Martin and Edwin De Los Santos are negotiating for a March 29 fight on the undercard of Sebastian Fundora vs. Errol Spence at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The weight for the Martin vs. De Los Santos fight could be 135 or 140.
Struggle in action?
Fernando Sabatini reports that the Martin-De Los Santos fight is in negotiations. If it comes to fruition, it would be the first fight for De Los Santos (16-2, 14 KOs) since his 12-round unanimous decision loss on Nov. 16, 2023, in Las Vegas. It was a fight for the vacant WBC lightweight title. Shakur made it really ugly with his movement and clinch.
The fans at T-Mobile Arena that night booed both fighters from the fourth round and Shakur continued to boo while being interviewed inside the ring after the fight. It was he who made him boring to Las Vegas fans, who have little patience for runners.
That fight should have been scored as a draw or a win for Edwin as he landed all the significant punches in the contest. Shakur just ran and held on.
‘The Ghost’ Martin (18-1, 12 KO) is coming off an eighth-round knockout loss to WBA Lightweight Champion Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis on June 15, 2024. Martin trailed at the time of the knockout by a score of 67-66, 67-66 and 67-66.
If the fight happens, De Los Santos would have to be the heavy favorite to knock out Martin as he has the advantage in hand speed and punching power. Martin looked poor against Artem Harutyunyan on July 15, 2023 and had to rally to win that fight by unanimous decision over 12 rounds in the championship rounds.
14 months too long?
For Martin and De Los Santos, this is an important fight as they both need a win to stay in the world title hunt. De Los Santos had already been out of the ring for 14 months since his loss to Shakur. He should have returned a long time ago.
“I have confirmed that Edwin De Los Santos and Frank Martin are in negotiations for a possible fight on March 29th at the MGM in Las Vegas as part of the Fundora-Spence (card) event. She could be 135 or 140 lbs,” said Fernando Sabatini X.
