The FBI joins the New York Police Department (NYPD) in the search for the suspect who fatally shot Brian Thompson, CEO of UnitedHealthcare, as the manhunt enters its fourth day.
The agency is offering up to $50,000 for information leading to the gunman’s arrest and conviction, according to the FBI’s New York City field office.
Thompson, who was scheduled to address an investor meeting, was murder Early Wednesday morning in Manhattan outside a hotel after being shot in the back and right calf. He was pronounced dead just 30 minutes after impact, authorities said.
The authorities have posted the photos of the gunman, which the FBI also shared in its reward announcement Friday night. The authorities have collected and tested DNA evidence, namely a discarded water bottle and a protein bar wrapper discovered near the scene. Police have also discovered a cell phone and fake identification, which they believe belong to the suspect.
Law enforcement said the killer did he probably left New York by bus.
“We have video of him entering the Port Authority bus terminal. We don’t have video of him leaving, so we believe he may have boarded a bus,” said police Sgt. of New York, Joseph Kenny.
Law enforcement also noted that he likely traveled into the city on a Greyhound bus. They are currently tracing their path to the Hilton Midtown hotel where Thompson was shot.
“Finally we have him at 86th Street and Columbus Avenue walking. He loses his bike and from there, we have him in a taxi and a taxi takes him to 178th Street and Broadway, which, as we know, is a center of ‘Port Authority buses,’ Kenny said. “These buses are interstate buses.”
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch called the shooting a “brazen and targeted attack”.
“This does not appear to be a random act of violence,” Tisch said during a briefing. “A lot of people passed on the suspect, but he seemed to be waiting for his target.”
He was too later discovered who had the shells written messages about them, including the words “deny”, “defend” and “depose”. ABC News first reported the words.
He has anxiety surrounding the perceived assassination of the insurance CEO he led other large healthcare companies to remove photos of its top executives, close buildings and even switch to virtual investor meetings.
