Asus’s ROG range has never had an external flash, but the latest laptops are getting closer to creating a bright display on their lids. The company’s latest Strix line, especially the ROG Strix Scar, has added “AniMe” LED lights to its cover than the latest back. ROG Phone 9. If the only thing you need in a gaming rig is more lighting, then the new ROG Strix Scar 16 and 18 would be at the top of the pile.
However, if you don’t care about lighting, there’s a lot to like. The Strix Scar 16 and 18 features an Intel Core Ultra 9 285HX up to the laptop version of the Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090 with 175W max TGP and 24GB of VRAM. As for its display, OLED hopefuls will have to settle for 2560 and 1440 mini-LED screens with a refresh rate of 240 Hz. At least Asus promises that the screen will be very bright and support Nvidia G-Sync and Dolby Vision HDR.
AniMe’s control panel pops up on the bottom right, and you can set it to play pictures or animations. During the briefing, I got to see for myself how the preset system allows you to add your own GIFs to the backlight and adjust the RGB bar around the chassis.
These are heavy laptops, sitting at 6.28 pounds on the light end, but these convertibles can support up to 64 GB of DDR5 RAM and 2 TB of SSD storage. Even better, Asus has made it easy to mess with and replace these parts. The battery and RAM are held in place by screws that take a few seconds to remove instead of requiring a special screwdriver.
ROG is also introducing its new Flow Z13, a Windows gaming tablet with AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395 APU. This chip should deliver solid gaming from its 2.5K (2560 by 1440) 180Hz display. Asus said it includes a vapor chamber and Arc Flow fans to keep the tablet cool and the laptop’s top chip inside. And, of course, it comes with a foldable keyboard and stands for your iPad.
I’m still not sold on tablets or phones for real gamers for anyone but the most serious Genshin Impact players. There are many options for pint-sized games, especially with the best hand-held ones on offer, such as Asus’ ROG Ally X.
