South Africa they cemented their position at the top of the World Test Championship points table (WTC points table) with a big win over Pakistan in the second Test. The Proteas inflicted a 10-wicket defeat on Pakistan in the final match of the series, played at Newlands, Cape Town.
After a poor performance in the first innings, Pakistan did well with the bat in the second innings. However, South Africa eventually overcame Pakistan’s resistance on the fourth day of the Test to sweep the two-match series.
South Africa took the driver’s seat by scoring a mammoth total of 615 runs in the first innings. Opener Ryan Rickelton starred with the bat, scoring 259, while captain Temba Bavuma and wicketkeeper-batsman Kyle Verreynne also scored centuries.
In reply, Pakistan were bowled out for a paltry total of 194 runs. Apart from Babar Azam (58), no other Pakistani batsman could reach the 50-run mark in an innings. For South Africa, Kagiso Rabada took 2 wickets while debutant Kwena Maphaka and Keshav Maharaj took two wickets each.
Asked to push on, Pakistan fared well in the second innings. Captain Shan Masood and Babar Azam shared a big stand of 205 runs for the first wicket. However, after the stand was broken after Babar’s dismissal for 81, Pakistan continued to lose wickets at regular intervals.
They ended up being bowled out for 478 runs. Masood was Pakistan’s top scorer, scoring 145 runs. Rabada and Maharaj took 3 wickets each in the innings.
Set a target of 58 runs, South Africa crossed the mark in just 7.1 overs. David Bedingham, promoted to opener of the innings, smashed 44 off just 30 balls to ensure the Proteas got home without any problems.
A stunning victory in Cape Town confirmed South Africa’s position at the top of the WTC points table. While a win in the first test booked them a place in the WTC finals, a win in the last one ensured they would enter the finals at the top of the WTC points table.
South Africa will meet reigning champions Australia in the title decider. Although Australia will play two more Tests in the current cycle, they cannot displace South Africa from the top spot. South Africa has a scoring percentage of 69.44 while Australia is second with a scoring percentage of 63.73.
Meanwhile, Pakistan is languishing at eighth place in the WTC points table with a points percentage of 27.78. Pakistan will also play two more Tests in the current cycle and will look to improve their position in the table.
