Freshman Sen. Bernie Moreno wants border bill on Trump’s desk by Day 1, putting Democrats on record

Recently sworn Senator Bernie Moreno, R-Ohio, wants to bring legislation addressing the crisis on the southern border to President-elect Trump’s desk immediately, and believes he could get enough votes on the floor.

“We have to make sure that we actually do the things that we campaigned for,” he told Fox News Digital in an interview, referring to the prevalence of the border in the campaign.

Noting that voters were often concerned about “open borders and high prices“, the Ohio Republican, who unseated Democrat Sherrod Brown, said the problems must be addressed immediately.

“We are going to do it so that there is no illegal immigration, that we seal our border, secure our border and deport anyone who is in this country illegally,” explained Moreno.

The hypothetical legislation would include “funding deportations, making sure that we have the funding to secure the border to make sure that we have a safe and secure border, that we finish the wall, that we put in the technology, that we put in place the money so these deportation efforts can happen on a large scale,” he said.

“We can do it soon, I’m sure,” the senator said. “We may even get a bill in front of President Trump right when he’s sworn in.”

For a measure to pass the Senate outside of the budget reconciliation process, it must receive at least 60 votes in a floor vote, overturning a legislative filibuster. Republicans will have just a 53-vote majority in the 119th Congress, and defeating the filibuster would require Democratic votes to advance a bill.

“Look, there should be 100 votes on this because this is not a Republican issue,” Moreno said. “This is an American issue. I wish Democrats would take public positions against securing our border, because that’s crazy.”

Senate Majority Leader John Thune, RSD, could bring those border measures up for a vote and put Democratic senators on the record when it comes to key GOP-led border bills. This was a tactic frequently used by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, DN.Y., who scheduled several votes on abortion, contraception and in vitro fertilization (IVF).

While Moreno wants some border-related bills to be voted on immediately, some of the illegal immigration legislation is expected to be included in a reconciliation bill this year, that tax cuts, energy and defense must also be addressed.

“Members of Congress are working on a powerful bill that will bring our country back and make it greater than ever,” Trump wrote on Truth Social on Sunday. “We must secure our border, unleash American energy and renew Trump’s tax cuts, which were the biggest in history, but we will do even better: NO TOP TAXES. EVERYTHING WILL BE INCLUDED WITH RATES, AND MUCH MORE, FROM COUNTRIES THAT HAVE TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF THE US FOR YEARS.”

“Republicans must come together and quickly deliver these historic victories for the American people. Be smart, be tough and send the bill to my desk for signing as soon as possible. MAKE AMERICA BACK BIG!”
