Rangers were unable to build on their impressive win at the Old Firm as Hibs hit back to salvage a draw and extend their unbeaten run in the Premiership.
It was the perfect start for Philippe Clement’s side as Hamza Igamane fired them ahead inside the opening four minutes before they headed home a powerful second as they dominated the early stages.
Hibs began to find some rhythm and Martin Boyle put the ball into the net from the edge of the box before equalizing from the penalty spot after Josh Campbell was pulled down by Ianis Hagi.
In what Chris Sutton of Sky Sports described as a “crazy game”, Igamane thought he had hit back when he headed Vaclav Cerny’s low shot into the net to complete his hat-trick.
But there were two more occasions when Rocky Bushiri headed Hibs back level at either end and then missed late chances to take all three points.
David Gray’s side are now unbeaten in six, while Rangers remain second, 10 points behind Celtic.
Despite the euphoria of their Old Firm derby success at Ibrox, Rangers have now dropped points in each of their last three away games, missing the chance to put real pressure on their city rivals at the top of the Premiership.
Hibs made one change to the side that started Thursday’s 1-1 draw at St Johnstone as Dwight Gayle replaced Junior Hoilett in attack, while captain Joe Newell and striker Elie Youan again missed out through injury.
The visitors were unchanged from the side that started the derby as goalkeeper Liam Kelly again replaced Jack Butland, who continues his recovery after being hospitalized with internal bleeding in his leg.
Hibs got off to a nervous start and were punished for their slackness in the fourth minute when Iganemane pounced on Ianis Hagi’s well-timed cutback from the left after Bushiri had tangled as he tried to catch the ball behind for Igamane.
Bushiri did better in Rangers’ next chance when he stood firm to deny Nedim Bajrami’s effort after the Albanian crossed threateningly from the left.
The hosts struggled to contain the visitors early on and Hyeokkyu Kwon did enough to deflect Igamane’s shot after Mohamed Diomande had teed up the Moroccan just outside the box.
Bajrami and Vaclav Cerny saw powerful corner kicks pushed into the corners in quick succession by Jordan Smith before pressure from the Ibrox side produced a second goal in the 19th minute. Bajrami’s cross from the left played past an unmarked Igamane and the Moroccan headed it over Smith from seven yards, who was able to make the effort but was unable to keep it.
At that point it looked as if Rangers would cruise to victory as Hibs – in a state of mild disarray – could not find a foothold.
But the hosts hit back in the 32nd minute when Jack Iredale took a free-kick into the box and was assisted in the danger area by Lewis Miller and Josh Campbell, Bushiri cleverly laying the ball into the path of Boyle, who fired low. with 12 meters.
Incredibly, the scores were level on the hour when Hagi fouled Campbell as he tried to latch on to Gayle’s pass and Boyle made no mistake.
Hibs suddenly got their tails up and looked the more likely to take the lead, with Miller seeing a ferocious shot pushed over by Kelly before the Australian defender headed the post shortly after.
Gers coach Philippe Clement – clearly worried by what he saw – made a triple substitution in the 70th minute as Hagi, Bajrami and the injured Dujon Sterling were replaced by Danilo, Oscar Cortes and Leon King.
Four minutes later, the visitors regained the lead when Igamane scored after Cerny reduced the deficit.
However, Bushiri – as he did when he scored the equalizer in a 3-3 draw at home to Aberdeen in November – had the final say when he headed home Nicky Cadden’s corner.
