Dara Khosrowshahi is stepping down from the board of autonomous vehicle technology company Aurora Innovation, citing a desire to focus on his ongoing duties as CEO of Uber and reduce his commitment to an outside organization, according to a filing Friday.
Khosrowshahi’s resignation took effect on Tuesday. Aurora says Khosrowshahi’s decision to leave the board was not due to any disagreements with the company.
Uber and Aurora Innovation executives have pushed back. In 2020, Uber has outsourced its self-driving app, Uber ATG, to Aurora. The deal at the time involved Uber giving its money to ATG and investing $400 million in Aurora, giving them a 26% stake in the combined company. Khosrowshahi joined the Aurora team as part of the partnership.
Through Uber Freight, Uber’s freight platform that connects shippers and carriers, the ice and shipping giant maintained its connection with Aurora. In June, Uber and Aurora announced a multi-year partnership placing vehicles powered by Aurora technology on the Uber Freight network.
Uber’s relationship with Aurora, however, is not exclusive. The company has it too deal with Waabi, self-driving car startup founded by Raquel Urtasun, who previously served as chief scientist and head of R&D at Uber ATG.
Shailen Bhatt, senior vice president and chief operating officer at AtkinsRéalis, will join the Aurora team in the Khosrowshahi space. Bhatt has a history of working for the Federal Highway Administration.
Khosrowshahi’s decision to leave the board comes weeks after Nolan Shenai, Aurora’s general counsel, announced his intention. come down to the ground effective January 6, 2025. Ossa Fisher, Aurora’s president, will take Shenai’s position as the company considers his successor.
