When The Four Pleasures: The First Steps hits theaters later this year, it’s going to be a landmark the fourth time something it is done as follows. Four times in the last forty years a new beginning Fantastic Four movie has been created. And, if you can believe it, it all happened almost 10 years apart. Does this bode well for the new film or does it foreshadow a new film set in 2035? Let’s break it down.
Undoubtedly the most famous Fantastic Four the film so far was released in July 2005. Directed by Tim Story, it featured Ioan Gruffudd, Jessica Alba, Chris Evans, and Michael Chiklis as the first Marvel family. Despite the mixed reviews, it was a big enough hit to get a sequel in 2007 Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. That didn’t happen and, alas, the Fantastic Four reruns were dead (until Evans reappeared Deadpool & Wolverine of course).
Ten years (and one month) later, in August 2015, the new team was unveiled. It was directed by Josh Trankand Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Michael B. Jordan, and Jamie Bell starred in the band this season. The film had its moments but the production of the issue ended appear on the screenand in the end, the film was a critical and financial failure.
Now it’s been 10 years and in July again, another Fantastic Four is on the way. Directed by Matt Shankman, this time the cast includes Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach. The difference now, however, is that since Disney bought Fox, this Fantastic Four is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
And no, we haven’t forgotten about the OG. Biography of Roger Corman Fantastic Four The film was not officially released due to copyright issues, but it began to be noticed in the summer of 1994. This throws off our “10 years” mentality, but it is only a few months.
Therefore, apart from the novelty that, since the 1990s, the new Fantastic Four teams have appeared in films for almost ten years (1994, 2005, 2015, and 2025 respectively), what does this say about the franchise? It’s pretty cool, isn’t it? No behind-the-scenes creative team has mastered the alchemy that has made comic book characters, dating back to 1961, so successful. But maybe, after all, the fourth time will be the charm. At least we hope so. What do you think?
