West Ham’s win over Wolves eased the pressure on head coach Julen Lopetegui, but results will be closely watched over the coming games.
Lopetegui’s future was on the line when his former team Wolves came to the London Stadium on Monday night, with the board seeing it as a cup final for the Spaniard.
However, a A 2-1 win inspired by Jarrod Bowen gave him some breathing room and moved West Han nine points clear of the relegation zone.
Those at the club who want a change of manager are not getting carried away with victory over a struggling Wolves side – they are second bottom of the table – and are still looking for consistent results and improvement in defence.
But there is recognition that the team stuck together in difficult circumstances to get the win after a difficult few days at the club after Michail Antonio’s car accident.
West Ham’s players will now have two scheduled rest days before the trip to Bournemouth on Monday night. Football – live Sky Sports.
West Ham face Brighton and Southampton after the game against Bournemouth.
Lopetegui succeeded David Moyes this summer on a two-year deal, with an option for another year.
When the former Real Madrid coach was hired by West Ham, he was asked to do three things: integrate nine new signings – some with no experience at the top level – change the system they were playing in to create more chances and win games on a more consistent basis.
Lopetegui is fully aware that there is plenty of room for improvement, but he believes he is hitting two of those three goals while also undergoing a rebuilding process.
West Ham safe Julen Lopetegui:
“We are happy, we dedicate the victory to Michail and his family. It was difficult in the last days – last week – especially in the last days. He deserves this. We love Michail a lot, he is a special person for us. I am sure that he will overcome this bad moment and come back today, the best we can do is win for him.
“We didn’t start the first half well. We score a goal from a set piece, always important. The team showed character and a good mentality (after the tie). This mentality will help us win more points.
“We deserved to win, we had a lot of opportunities, a lot of corners. We overcame one bad moment.”
The sky in Germany say the former coach of Borussia Dortmund Edin Terzic he will not succeed Lopetegui if he is fired.
Terzic, who was a former assistant manager at West Ham under Slaven Bilic, is out of a job after leaving Dortmund this summer after leading them to the Champions League final, which they lost to Real Madrid.
The sky in Germany understands that Kasper Hjulmand is a serious option if Lopetegui is fired.
The Dane is out of work after stepping down as coach of the Danish national team this summer, but the 52-year-old has failed to make the cut at club level since 2019.
