My alarm is set for 6AM three days a week and I hope to make it to the 6:30AM yoga class. In the winter, it’s almost midnight at that hour and the only reason I sometimes find myself doing vinyasa early in the morning is because of the rising sun. Hatch Recovery 2. I set mine to start filling the room with a soft glow about 20 minutes before the cymbals start playing. The light helps my brain to wake up before I wake up and the visuals of the dishes seep into my subconscious – I often find myself awake without knowing why.
Of course, there are many solar alarm clocks out there. Most are cheap and don’t have registration options. But I love the Hatch app, which allows you to change the time, colors, brightness, volume, tones and more of your morning alarm.
You can also set morning meditations, walks or motivational pep talks to play after your alarm. These are a few minutes long and are designed to help you transition from bed rest to ambulatory. Of course, if you share a bed and the other is still asleep, playing encouraging dispatches is rude. So I get more mileage out of sleep aids. A bath of sounds, visuals, stories and meditations that help transition between the burdens of waking life and sleep.
It’s $5 a month for a full library of alarm and sleep sounds and access to all news and music. Without it, you only get to choose. I’ve been subscribed for over a year now because anything that makes me exercise in the dark I have to pay for. – Amy Skorheim, reporter
