Former CNN anchor Don Lemon poked fun at the infighting in the Republican party H-1B visas – a key program to attract international talent that has been criticized as too complicated and open to abuse – calling supporters of President-elect Trump “damn idiots”.
Lemon, in a recent clip of “The Don Lemon Show,” blasted Trump supporters, claiming they share a “stupid MAGA brain” and are in some sort of “cult.” He also joked that “MAGA-land” is in civil war.
“Oh my god, I love this. Now you’re finding out, you stupid idiots. You’re just finding this out now. You’re so stupid, and you deserve it,” she said, adding that it shows “hypocrisy.”
“Yeah. I’m enjoying your stupidity and how you’ve been taken. I’m cracking up. I’m laughing, I am,” he said later. “You’ve been co-opted because you’re in a cult and you don’t even realize it because you have a stupid MAGA brain and you don’t understand. How stupid and stupid are you?”
His comments come after key Trump allies, including tech billionaires Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, who were touched to lead the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), faced scrutiny from some in the GOP after expressing support for the special visa program.
Trump too supported H-1B visas during a telephone interview with the New York Post over the weekend.
“I’ve always liked visas, I’ve always been in favor of visas,” Trump said Saturday. “That’s why we have them.”
The dispute, which was initially led by far-right activist Laura Loomer on the social platform X, apparently originated from a suggestion last month by Sriram Krishnan, Trump’s pick for White House policy advisor about artificial intelligence, which Musk examine the removal of caps on green cards for skilled immigrants. Krishnan’s comments resurfaced after Trump nominated him to serve in his new administration.
Loomer falsely claimed that Krishnan sought to eliminate all caps on H-1B visas—he called for the removal of country caps on green cards, a collective term for immigrant visas—although he later apologized for sharing Federal Election Commission records containing his personal information.
Trump’s former political strategist Steve Bannon also waded into the debate, calling the entire program a “scam” run by Silicon Valley oligarchs and inviting Loomer on his “War Room” show to discuss the controversy.
Musk also faced accusations of censorship after several right-wing accounts on X, including Loomer’s, lost access to premium features such as verification and monetization.according to NBC News.
The debate exposed a rift over immigration among Trump’s allies, yes he swore to implement sweeping actions when taking office, such as launching a mass deportation program targeting people in the country illegally and, in particular, people with criminal records. The incoming president has strengthened these plans by playing several allies for key immigration– related roles.
Musk even suggested he would “go to war” over the issue.
“I’m going to war on this issue you can’t understand,” Musk, reportedly a former H-1B recipient, wrote in one of several posts on X.
