The biggest names in men’s golf are in Pennsylvania this week for the US Open, but why is the event as important and how hard players will find it difficult to find Oakmont? Here’s all you need to know on the eve of the 2025 competition, live on Sky Sports …
The US Open is one of the biggest events in the golf calendar, and the third is of four men a year, after being in April in April in April and PGA Championship in May and on the eve of the Open July.
In the United States, it was perfected by the United States of Golf Association (USGA), and traditionally ends the third Sunday in June, and the place was used for every edition.
This year’s US Open, 125 edition, will be held at the Oakmont County Club in Pennsylvania. The place was described earlier as the “most terrible” greenery in golf and “ultimate examination”, with a thick rough and longest three or three in the main history among its challenges.
The course is the tenth time host by the US Open – more than any second place – and for the first occasion from Dustin Johnson’s 2016 victory. She also hosted two American women’s OpenS, three PGA championships and multiple releases of American amateur.
Ben Hogan (1953), Jack Nicklaus (1962), Johnny Miller (1973) and Ernie Els (1994) are among other former US Open winners in Oakmont, which was set for this year’s edition as a Par-70 and measured at 7,382 Jards.
Any professional or amateur with an index of 0.4 handicap or lower may sign up for a feature, resulting in a record 10,202 entry for qualifications and a chance to join players who have already been fully released.
Local qualifications took place at 110 sites across the United States, Canada and Mexico, and leading players in these events of 18 holes and then progressed to the final qualifying phase.
In May and June, a series of qualifying events of 36 holes to finalize the terrain took place and 10 seats used in the United States, along with one from each of Canada, England and Japan.
All the world’s best 60 years are eligible for this at the US Open, together with all multiple winners at PGA Tour in the last 12 months and all major champions in the previous five years.
Bryson Dechabbeau will return as a defender after last year’s victory with one -sided cracks Rory Mcilroywho won masters in April to finish Grand Slam in his career, while World No 1 Scottie Scheffler The favorite is after the success of the PGA Championship last month.
Xander Schauffele And Scheffler could both move three times to Grand Slam in career by winning, while Shane Lowry – who held a four -goal lead after 54 holes at the US Open – among Europeans who chase great fame.
The starting field of 156 golfers play two rounds of golf on Thursday, June 12 and Friday, June 13, and the top 60 and the tie broke through and advanced until the weekend.
The lead scorer after 72 holes will win the trophy, while the aggregate playoffs will take place with two holes if the results are achieved after the last round. The tournament was previously used by the playoffs of 18 holes the next day, and Tiger Woods won the last one in that system in 2008.
The USGA has yet to announce the prize or share of the 2025 competition winner, after having a record amount last year on offer.
The $ 21.5 million prize fund 2024 was the largest in all major, while $ 4.3 million was the winner to the winner for a one-time event outside the PGA TUR Championship in the season.
US Open Champion Prima Jack Nicklaus medal, replica version of trophy and a list of exemptions, including an invitation to the tournament in the next 10 years.
The winner also provides calls in the next five editions of Masters, PGA Championship, Open Championship and The Players, along with a five -year exemption at PGA Tour.
The best 10 finishers – and tie – will be excluded in the next year by US Open, while the best four finishers and ties will be invited to Masters to August National next April.
There are more FedExcup points from regular PGA Tour events, and 750 went to the winner, while players from Europe and the United States can earn qualifying points in the race to qualify for this September Cup on Bethpage Black.
Dechambemau was used by the late collapse of McIlroy to win the US Open dramatic victory with one shooting in Pinehurst no. 2.
The American led in three goals on the last day, but he found himself two behind when McIlroy – played in the penultimate group – made four birds in growth with five holes around the turn.
McIlroy remained one ahead until it followed the back-beam from the 15th, with the other on the last par-four, they lacked twice from four legs over that closure, as Dechabbeau produced sensational up and down to strengthen its second main title.
The 2011 champion McIlroy ended the winner in the last two US openings and in each of the last six years he announced the 10 best finals, while Schauffele was not lower than 14 in the previous eight US open appearances.
Scheffler was one of the runners when Matt Fitzpatrick won the US Open at Brookline in 2022, with Wyndham Clark (2023), Jon Rahm (2021), Dechambemaau (2020), Gary Woodland (2019) and Brooks Koeka (2017 and 2018).
Woods is no longer exceptional to automatically get involved in the US Open Field, after winning the event at the 2008 event, and has not added its main sum since 2019 and has significantly fell on the world rankings in recent years.
The 49-year-old USGA handed over a special exemption to instill in last year’s competition, where he missed the cut, but for the fourth time in five years he will be missed from the field.
Woods was undergoing an Achilles injury surgery in March and had already missed the first two major years, and the former World No 1 played a limited schedule from a car accident in February 2021, which left him with injuries with his threatening career.
