The old rivalry was on the biggest stage at Wembley, but after being owned by the women’s challenge Cup for four years in a row, St Helens fell to a heavy defeat of Wigan from 42-6.
It was the clinical effect of Warriors to do the job, trying from Megan Williams, Mary Coleman, Isabel Rowe, Eva Hunter, Grace Banks, Anna Davies and Emily Vevers who completed their dominance.
The victory was listed by Wigan’s Maiden Challenge Cup Triumph, which means that the saints have to give up the trophy after 1,463 days with him in understanding.
The question that will go to the competition, with Wigan, the team he has won in the Women’s Super League so far this season, was that the saints could stop their rivals?
While Saints Coach Derek Hardman paid tribute to Wigan’s performance, he stressed that his own side would remain unwavering because of the rise of their rivals and hit the “undisturbed” angle before the game, since his side entered the competition as holders.
“What we have achieved is massive and let’s not persecute anyone,” said Hardman, who attracted the inability of his part to build on his lonely attempt at the beginning of the second half.
“If they (Wigan) continue to achieve what we have achieved, they will deserve recognition, but I think some questions are about how we will stop Wigan disrespect.
“Let’s see what the rest of the year brings, but we’re sure to fight.”
For Wigan, however, he was a cheerful day, with their main coach Denis Betts praised the two years of the hard work of his part who led them to this point.
“I’m very proud,” Betts said.
“When we started last year, everyone could see that there were some really talented players in the group and they just needed to direct in the right direction. To see them today, the dream is a coach.”
