Indy 500: Alex Palou beat Marcus Ericsson to win Indycar for the first time in Indianapolis | F1 news

Alex Palou beat Marcus Ericsson to become the first Spanish driver to win Indy 500 on Sunday after a strenuous battle in Indianapolis.

Palou made a winning move with 14 rounds when he bravely dived into the interior of former F1 Ericsson driver in turn 1 and held the lead to the end.

The Spaniard, who dominated the Indycar 2025 season with five victories with six races, was an external candidate who joined the new Cadillac F1 2026 team, but discovered that he was “not looking for a change.”

He is a three-time Indycar champion, but winning the Indy 500 will place him among the greats in the series.

“I can’t believe it! What an amazing day, what an amazing race!” said Palou.

“It’s unbelievable to be here and win. There are some moments that I felt really good in the race, but I didn’t know if I could pass Marcus or not, but I did it.

“My first oval victory and there is no better place for it.”

After five safety cars in the first half of the race, the last 94 rounds were launched under the conditions of the green flag.

Ericsson had a better strategy because he was able to stop the last time later than other front runners, with 28 rounds, and appeared in leadership, but Palou fought next to David Malukas, who finished third.

His predominance on Ericsson will collapse as one of the most important in his career, and he professionally retained the Swedes while he was in the dirty air of traffic during the last 14 laps.

Josef NewGarden asked to become the first driver to win the Indy 500 three times in a row, but in the second half of the race suffered pressure on the fuel.

Pole-Sitter Robert Shwartzman collapsed dramatically into his crew of the pits.
