Russell is fourth on the driver’s ranking, 47 points from Oscar’s leader Piastra, but he defied the inferior pace to the McLaren Australian team – and often Red Bull – to achieve four podiums in the opening six rounds of the season that preceded Imoli.
He continued: “This is not the first race for this season in which we were slower than Ferrari, even slower or the same pace as Williams, but on those occasions we just managed to get the result.
“But today we were very fortunate to have sincerely completed the P7.”

“You look at Ferrari a few years ago, they used to be mega quickly in qualifying and slow in the race. Now they have somehow made a turn, and they don’t really understand why it is.
“So we have to find a better compromise, especially on the eve of the next race. We are approaching summer and that doesn’t really seem good for us. We have to think quickly.”
