Chief Coventry Frank Lampard believes that the semi-final defeat in the last play-off championship in Sunderland was one of the ugliest career moments.
The head of the Ballard Day at an extra stopping time sent Sunderland to Wembley in a dramatic way, making it 1-1 in the night and 3-2 on the aggregate to set the championship final against Sheffield United on May 24, live on it Sky Sports.
But it was a heart for Coventry Boss Lampard because Sky Blues “Premier League promotion Dream ended up on Wearside.
Asked how to be cruel football, former England and Chelsea said midfielder Sky Sports: “Yes, this is the biggest example I think I was probably involved.
“First, congratulations to the Sunderland, they go to the finals. But I have immense pride on my players, during two games, we dominated at home and dominated the huge periods of this game.
“Where we came, 17th in the December League, the players were great in the second half of the season. We compete with the parachute teams in the sense where we finish.
“We came here with absolute courage to play the way we play. They had to give up on us because of the way we played, the way the guys controlled the game. They don’t deserve it, the players. I was much older, I was a lot, so I did a shot and I achieved success.
“I guess I can be a little more balanced in my job, but they don’t deserve it for these players. So, congratulations to Sunderland. We are not outraged, but we were a better team in two football games. Absolutely clear. That’s why they’ll be so happy that they’ll win that game.
“I can’t ask anymore. I’m so disappointed because of the club, for fans, owners and players. Once the dust is shrugs, I cannot be disappointed with the way they play.
“Work every day with them and they take information, and they are together in the group even in the end on the field. So, you know, football.
“I didn’t have to tell them much because the players did it. They owned him on the field. They owned him until extra time.
“They owned him the second half. It was as if there were a bunch of dead silence. They realized that the team was coming and taking control in their home place.
“It’s cruel. But I can’t remember anything but pride for the season and tonight.
“We wanted to go to Wembley. But sometimes the gods in certain ways of conspiracy against you.
“We want the team to reinforce. The players have shown what they can do, that they can compete. The fans deserve it at this football club.
“I think tonight they will go home proud of their players, support. And, yes, I’m just disappointed because they don’t get a trip to Wembley.”
In the meantime, Sunderland remains on the road to end its eight -year persecution of the Premier League and will face the blades at Wembley for a place in a top flight.
Black Cats Boss Regis Le Bris says he will draw attention to Wembley Showdown later this week.
He said Sky Sports: “On Thursday we will get involved for the finals, of course. So, it’s just a matter of enjoyment, recovery and we’ll get involved in the finals very quickly.”
The Frenchman said of a dramatic end: “It’s really fantastic because the script was absolutely amazing.
“We were probably too nervous in the first part of the game, and during the extra time I think we were good. We played our football and now it’s just fantastic, so just enjoy it.
“It was a bit frustrating (on the touch line) because we knew on the bench that we could play better football, but it was a semifinal at home is 1-0 before the equalizer, I think we were between two views.
“So, after a goal, it was clear that we wanted to score now and the game changed.”
Asked what he said in an extension, he replied, “I think we changed the structure because at that moment we played with three midfielders. That was not possible, and yes, we came back in the game, and I think it was Sunderland at that moment.”
The Sunderland hero, Ballard, scored a hit at the last second of two added minutes of extra time to send the northeast side on Wembley.
Said to the international northern Ireland Sky Sports: “These are really created dreams. The fans were absolutely amazing today. It was just the feeling that it would not be our day.
“All the guys were desperately giving them something to celebrate. What a dramatic finale. This is what dreams are created.”
He questioned his goal, he said, “I got up too early. I was so determined and I can’t remember what happened. It just happened.
“That’s some feeling.”
The 25-year-old added: “I was so nervous by going into that first game. He left Chris Mephama, who was probably our best player all season.
“So it was a big call and I feel about him, but I’m very happy that Gafffer entrusted to me and I hope I got him back.”
In the meantime, Ballard’s teammate Luke O’Nien said the game was “blur”, but that he was sorry for Coventry.
He said Sky Sports: “I lost myself for words. I just look around what this man (ballard) did for this city. It’s amazing.
“It’s a merit for Coventry. It’s hard to take. I think it was a cow, so the merit for them and their fans. I was at the end of the loss at half -time, and it was difficult, but I really enjoyed the game; they are difficult opponents and they will come well.
“She was a little blurred by the whole game. I just remembered the last moment. I saw Ballard on top and everyone ran in different directions.
“I can’t remember the game, to be honest with you. I only remember the last moment.”
Sunderland legend Kevin Phillips speaking Sky Sports::
“It is ironic that Coventry has achieved the most from the set-ups and the intersection of this season, which is the set-play that cost them. It’s cruel, and you saw that Frank was pushed.
“But it’s about risk and Sunderland took its own. We asked at the beginning of the playoffs that would be a hero, and Dan Ballard did it.
“I don’t think (Le Bris) will change its tactics. It’s a big tone, it will be hot, and they will preserve their energy. Maybe a set-play will be played and hit them in a counterattack.
“Do they deserve to be there? I’ll say yes. The spirit, the hunger and the desire they showed. They needed some luck and they got it with a second goal in Coventry.
“Sometimes the murders are from time to time, but it’s football. Now they need to take him to Wembley and make a performance against a very good Sheffield United team.”
