Mercedes team director Toto Wolff says Formula 1 should be “open” due to the suggested change of regulations in new power units in 2026, after being previously labeled a “scarf”.

The F1 Commission meeting was held last month to discuss the possibility of reducing the amount of electricity production from the power unit. Changes in regulations that are not unusual in F1 late before the great overhaul of the rules.

“What we have signaled is that instead of acting now on assumptions – as we were great in previous years and then surpassed or endured – you don’t have to throw hardware and think of something new – it’s inside the software and permeability of what you can do.

“Next year we will see the final product on testing. As a manufacturer of power unit, we want this to be a great show. We want to win, but we are also aware that there should be variability and unpredictability in sports.”

Mercedes is believed to be in advance when it comes to 2026, which is the biggest change in rules in the history of F1, and almost every technical regulation changes.

The last engine change in 2014, Mercedes dominated three seasons with Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg, before Ferrari, then Red Bull, caught.

They won the title of Constructor for a record eight consecutive seasons between 2014 and 2021, plus seven straight driving championships.

“We have enjoyed the years since 2014 onwards, but over a long period of time, this is certainly not the best for sports,” Wolff continued.

“I try to be very balanced between what is good for Mercedes, what I have to do and what is the right solution that goes forward. We need to avoid these swings.

“Fia suggested this engine. No one liked it. 50 percent electric in the day was where road cars went and that was the reason to attract manufacturers like Audi and Porsche. So we did.

“It is difficult to change the goals’ columns, especially for new ones. Honda was sent again, and Audi committed, and including us, they do not want to change those goals at this stage. But, if necessary, we have to be open.”

Horner: The proposal is not new concern

Red Bull will enter a new era in a technical partnership with Ford as they build their own Red Bull propulsion engine.

Christian Horner has previously called the proposal “quite reasonable” and believes that any change in the electrical output will help in the race spectacle purely.

Another question about 2026 is concerned that it will be difficult to approach the minimum weight of a 768 -pound car, which is 32 pounds less than current cars.

FIA reduced the weight in an effort to make the car faster next year to help races, which is expected to achieve a smaller intervals and width.

But Red Bull Boss Horner believes that new, harder power units will balance less cars and tires.

“The number is pulled out of the car for the weight of the car. We have motorcycles that are significantly heavier and the weight of a car that has become lower,” he said.

Every 10 kg of savings in F1 is worth about three -tenths per round, which is a huge limit, so a significant difference in weight between the car will be key to the key order.

Wolff supports the current minimum weight of FIA for 2026.
