Ten minutes in the first part of the Champions League semi-finals, Paris Saint-Germain against Arsenal and Khvich Quadratskhelia is located on the left back. It covers Nuno Mendes, who pierced forward. But Quadratskhelia rebuked.
Fabian Ruiz invites him to press further, letting him know that he can handle it. At the next break in the game, Luis Enrique issues further instructions. It’s a small moment, but it points to something more. This is a different kind of star. This is a different PSG.
Not too long ago, Luis Enrique could see how to pray with Kylian Mbappe in a desperate attempt to convince the player to do anything that resembles defense duties. Now, in quartetskhelia, they have a signature of € 70 million (£ 59.5 million) that could work too much.
Georgia International did enough at the other end of the field in London to help him control his side. It was his help that made Ousmana Dembele scoring to score a starting goal within four minutes. Jurrien Timber fought to control quartetskhelia.
Full Bek Arsenal was silent by Vinicius Junior throughout the quarterfinals, but he resorted to pasteing three times the Wing PSG’s wing player in an introductory 20 minutes in which PSG showed why many experts now consider them an extraordinary team in Europe.
Timber was hooked up late in the game, but by then, Kvadatskhelia leaned into her defense responsibility, protecting Mendes by doublement on Bukayo Saka. He won the ball from Martin Odegaard in the corner, and did the same with Zaku a few moments later.
Ethan Nwneri came in. Quadratskhelia also separated him, fell to his knees to full time. Luis Enrique said his side were better without the ball than with her. Surprisingly, his wing player won the ball over than anyone else on the field.
David Webb cooperates closely with Kvadatskhelia as an auxiliary coach at Georgia national team. All this is not surprising for him. “It is said that some superstar players do not depict this work ethics, but this is not the case with failures,” he says Sky Sports.
“The national team campsites are very quiet, condensed and short, so we do not have a luxury of having them for a long time. But what is still doing, after training is over is his accessories. We do not ask him. He does it by himself.
“It’s a free kicking, shooting, one against those, nothing spectacular, just refusing the basics of your craft. When you look at the best players, they do it regularly, which is not something he does on the effect. He did it from day one.
“He is a night’s night to get off the training because he is very guided by the process. He wants to score so many goals, wants to have so much touch, and believes he is one or two percent a little more when it comes to play.”
Luis Enrique loves it, but its flexibility makes it perfect for PSG. Half an hour related to Arsenal, Kvadatskhelia switched from the left wing to the right. A short magic followed during which Dembele went to the left and filled it in advance.
“It’s fluid because they don’t have a fixed number 9, so it has freedom to move between the lines, pick up the ball in different areas,” says Webb. “He is very dangerous when he has the opportunity to wander and express himself. It makes it difficult to predict him.”
Webb also says that Kvadatskhelia had “something different”, which is a recurring topic in an analysis of players who headed an unusual path to the top. Mbappe was the winner of the World Cup as a teenager. Quadratskhelia returned to Georgia at the age of 21.
The product of the impressive Academy of Dinamo Tbilisi, it would be wrong to claim that he was not identified as a special talent at a young age, but the theory goes to the rough edges of the edges in his game to make him a unique figure in elite football.
There were still a hint of that quality of Maverick in his game in London. With a quarter of an hour, he tried 40 meters of David Ray at 40 meters that a few would notice, let alone tried. “People described him as a return, right?”
Webb remembers the conversation with Gareth Southgate in the Euro 2024. “He said it was like a return, but with that additional quality. We no longer see such old-fashioned wings. We had things about Chris Waddle and George Best.”
There is this smell of quartetskhelia, but if these comparisons bring in the image of the type outside Mancic, a deeper view of what makes it so well suggests something else. “What really impresses me is his character, humility and ride to get to the top,” webb adds.
“He always studies and asks questions and thinks that he can get an advantage on his own performance. If we present a tactical meeting at the upcoming opponents, he will ask thoughtful questions. In training, he will ask the game scripts.
“There are not many players who come to us and do it, but he is an intelligent boy, so he thinks about who he plays against so he can get into physically and tactically prepared. He knows their forces and weaknesses and where he could use them.”
It helps to explain why, at 24, quartetskhelia continues to improve. The level was already high. Two years ago, he now helped Napoli to win the title of Serie A. for the first time in 33 years, but Webb is among those who have witnessed evolution in his game.
“His movement patterns have become much better. I think he gained this intelligence to know when to make his races, when to cap, when to go and when to cross. I noticed that it increased. Since he is so intelligent, he quickly picks up things.
“Antonio Conte was good for him because he obviously had to work a lot from the ball, and we see it more with the national team. It’s not that he didn’t work before, but there is more intensity about him. I think his game will go to another level.”
There are many players in this PSG team that could be said to be a symbol of the side. On the back is a long marquinhos, while Dembele, Bradley Barcola and the desire to do a turn to renovate that French relationship.
But in its own way, Quadratskhelia, an outsider and a newcomer, may be best mitigated by a shift. With socks around the ankles, the status of a star from the Italian game and a significant fee for transfer, it could be mistaken for a mere glittering acquisition.
Instead, he can help define how Luis Enrique turned this team into a team – the one with a rare speed and even rarer quality, but a group of players who are willing to work. “That drive will surely keep it in the next few years,” Webb concludes.
“I think he could potentially continue and be one of the top five in the world. For me, he will definitely be the winner of the Champions League in the next two or three years.” If the extraordinary Khvich Quadatskhelia holds it, they will not have to wait so long.
