Bakayoko is unlikely to move to Newcastle in January as the Magpies have another job in mind

The January transfer window presents an opportunity for Newcastle United to bring in one or two new faces, although Johan Bakayoko does not want to move to Tyneside in the new year.

Eddie Howe needs his Newcastle side to start collecting the points needed in Premier League drive them towards European places.

To do this, The Magpies cannot consider selling their talismanalthough the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules may dictate that they must.

There is a clear need to strengthen elsewhere, which likely means there are no more funds available to commit to the exciting 21-year-old Belgian.

Rather, according to The Athletic (subscription required), Newcastle are focused on their desire to sign Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford in January and as a result are unlikely to follow up on their initial interest in Bakayoko. Certainly not in the first month of the new year.

Clarets manager Scott Parker is not believed to look kindly on such a deal, but with Burnley in the same boat as far as staying on the right side of financial fair play, it is a deal he may be forced to consider.

At just 22, Trafford is establishing himself as one of the best young up-and-coming English goalkeepers in the country.

While he has plenty of time to make his mark at a higher level than the English Championship, he may feel now is the right time to test himself against the best.
