Are Pretty Boxes Necessary?
WIRED: Beauty boxes are a great way to find new products, and often offer a better value compared to buying items separately. You can’t put a price tag on the dopamine rush of getting a gift in the mail every month. (Or maybe literally, you can, but I still think they’re worth it.) Products that don’t work for you make great gifts or giveaways.
TIRED: Some beauty boxes consist of plastic bottles and small tubes that are not environmentally friendly, which can be bulky and difficult to recycle. You will receive some products that are not suitable for your hair or skin type, or do not work well. Most beauty boxes don’t allow for any changes – what you get is amazing.
I reached out to popular services and asked to try the box for one month but it was actually three months. I compared the price of the included items to what the box cost. I also wrote about the diversity of all types and the ability of the average person to use them—weighing the specifics and what will work for most people. And yes, I put these cute little pots on my actual face and hair and skin. Please don’t ask me about the state of my bathroom during this test.
Note that some brands offer individual boxes that are available for purchase outside of subscriptions. I have not tested this or considered it part of the results of this book.
