Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., is calling for the speedy trial, conviction and execution of the man accused in the gruesome killing of a woman burned alive in a New York City subway
The outspoken Republican took to social media on Tuesday to address the incident, in which 33-year-old Guatemalan Sebastian Zapeta is accused of setting a woman on fire while riding a train in Brooklyn.
“Death penalty, don’t waste money on a long trial. Convict him and finish him. What he did is so unbelievably evil,” Greene said in a post on X. “I can’t watch the video anymore. And how It looks like no one tried to save her, maybe they did, but it doesn’t look like it.”
Zapeta faces charges of first- and second-degree murder and first-degree arson, which carry a maximum penalty of life in prison without parole.

Greene is not the only member of Congress involved in the case.
Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, R-Florida, also called for the death penalty.
“Death penalty,” he tweeted.
Rep. Andy BiggsR-Ariz., said in a post on X: “A woman intentionally set herself on fire on the subway today. Democrats’ soft-on-crime policies aren’t working.”
New York City Police Department Commissioner Jessica Tisch noted during testimony Sunday that Zapeta allegedly “used what we believe to be a lighter to ignite the victim’s clothing, which was completely covered in in a matter of seconds.” Assistant District Attorney Ari Rottenberg alleged in court Tuesday that the suspect fanned the fire with a shirt.
Zapeta’s next court appearance is scheduled for Dec. 27, according to online records.
A spokesperson for US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) said in a statement that Zapeta had been removed from the US in 2018 and then he re-entered the country illegally sometime “at an unknown date and place.”
