Lewis HamiltonHis race engineer Peter Bonnington decided to surprise him before his move to Ferrari. Bonnington, popularly known as Bono, made a surprise appearance in Hamilton’s Tommy Hilfiger outfit, and the seven-time world champion was taken aback when he saw her.
Hamilton drove his last race for Mercedes at the recently concluded Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. As he parted ways with the Silver Arrows, he also ended his collaboration with Bonnington, with whom he had worked for almost a decade.
Ahead of Hamilton’s latest move to Maranello, Bonnington wore the seven-time world champion’s Tommy Hilfiger gear from his paddock appearances. When he saw ‘Bon’ in sky blue denim, Hamilton expressed surprise.
The Mercedes driver posted a series of photos with his race engineer on his Instagram, with the caption:
“Two legends. Bono and Tommy.”
Hamilton is set to move to Ferrari next season after the British driver signed a multi-year deal with the Prancing Horse earlier this year. Despite having a contract with him for one plus one year, he has decided to race with Scarlet Ferrari from 2025.
Lewis Hamilton is leaving Mercedes after 12 long years. Here he has won six of his seven F1 titles, making it the most successful combination of driver and team. Along with six titles, he achieved 84 victories, won 78 pole positions and 78 podiums.
The entire Mercedes AMG F1 team, including team-mate George Russell, team principal Toto Wolff and race engineer Peter Bonnington sent farewell messages for the departing driver.
The 39-year-old will join his former F2 team boss, Fred Vasseur, and Monaco driver, Charles Leclerc. He will replace Carlos Sainzwho transferred to Williams.
Ahead of his move to Ferrari, Lewis Hamilton has touched on how close he was to Peter Bonnington, his race engineer. The duo started working together in 2013. year, and they were there until the end of 2024.
“What a rollercoaster ride it’s been with Bono, he’s been one of my closest friends for many years and it’s something I didn’t expect because he’s worked with Michael Schumacher, other great drivers,” Hamilton said (via Sports Illustrated).
“But he stood by me and for an engineer to hold on to someone as frustrating and painful as it can be at times, he stood by me every day without fail,” he added.
Hamilton and Bonnington’s ‘Hammer-Time’ is a familiar phrase in the paddock. It was created after a British driver once asked Bono to say these words whenever he needed to drive faster.
