Infinity Nikki is my new favorite release of 2024. It’s a cotton candy open game that offers more depth and variety than I expected. I love the colorful wardrobes, low level puzzles and fun side quests. But very strange Infinity Nikki It was something that I have been ignoring in the game for years: the picture.
I didn’t expect this to be so enlightening Infinity Nikki events. In fact, when it came down to the long list of lessons in my first semester, my first reaction was, “Oh great, what can I forget.”
Graphics have become a prominent feature of AAA single-player games over the past decade. For those who don’t know, this stops the game so you can pretend to be an action figure, make them mugs with silly words or carry a peace sign. You can slap on a filter or make a few adjustments to the focus, aperture, etc. to capture a stunning photo.
Over the years, I’ve seen people capture Nathan Drake, Ellie and Joel, Aloy and many other superhero or comic characters. I appreciate the photos when they cross my diet. And as game graphics become more and more vivid, it’s understandable that studios want to give players tools to capture beautiful moments when they happen. But every time I play a game with a photo, I have found that after taking one important photo with the tutorial, I don’t open the camera again.
My problem isn’t that the game isn’t pretty enough to register. I mean when I’m in the middle I’m playing like The Last of Usit doesn’t occur to me to slow down because I’m focused on the mechanics and goals of other games. Sure, there may be time to relax, but chasing your life in the immediate wilderness is not the time to search for random filters. And in some games, taking pictures doesn’t feel like something a player can do. Come on, there’s no way Kratos is going to take a selfie.
Like all his predecessors, Infinity Nikki it’s a beautiful game. Miraland has beautiful towns and beautiful landscapes, also beautiful in their beautiful scenery and hidden places. Everywhere you look there are tons of carefully constructed little things that serve no purpose other than to inspire you to create a beautiful image. You press a button to ride in a hot air balloon or blow bubbles on a cafe table. It’s a step away from many things, which you can do while sitting on a chair or bench.
What attracts me the most to become a shutterbug, is the system where players are encouraged to take pictures of famous places around Miraland. The first time I found it, it was a beautiful green area where I told Nikki to sit on a tree near an underground lake. It was a beautiful place, sure, but what really pleased me was that my outfit matched my style perfectly. So I didn’t just take a picture and go to do some important work. Taking time to look good and very important work.
There is no one-size-fits-all format Infinity Nikki. A number of unique ensembles offer the ability to play, but many pieces are available to look your way. Nikki could be a badass anime character from a fantasy land in tulle and glitter. Or he might look like someone you’d see playing the game on Twitch or TikTok in a big hoodie. Or you can pair a top hat with jean shorts and thigh high boots if you prefer. (Yes, I wanted to.)
The game knows you are there to play dress up. It also knows that the most obvious thing to do when playing dress-up is to keep yourself healthy and shooting. That’s why Infinity Nikki‘s photo mode feels not only fun, but important. It is a very important part of the game. When I put together a new outfit, I want to find a good place to take a photo. When I stumble upon an interesting site, I think about the shape that will best display it.
In general, the cameras and graphics do little to increase my love for the game. They are the symbolic cherry on top of the sundae. I am Infinity Nikkihowever, the image quality is ice cream. And it’s delicious.
