Comebacks have happened more often than ever in the Premier League since the start of last season, making 2024 an old year for comeback fans – and a particularly challenging one for Tottenham fans.
With 63 games contributing, 16.6% of games involving a come-from-behind win in 2023/24. represent the highest percentage recorded in competitions in which this has occurred throughout the entire Premier League campaign, according to choose.
By mid-October, season 2024/25. it was even higher than 17.1%. A few more epics followed, including ghost busters for bottom teams, one in the Manchester derby and seemingly inevitable misery for Spurs.
From Molineux to St Mary’s, 101GreatGoals.com looks back at the 10 biggest comebacks of the calendar year.

Long before Wolves were fighting relegation and Erik ten Hag’s reign at Manchester United was mercifully over, Kobbie Mainoo’s 97th-minute winner cruelly denied Gary O’Neil’s side the point they thought they had two minutes earlier.
The now-banished Marcus Rashford opened the days scoring following a flurry of press reports about the striker enjoying a night out in Belfast, and United looked well on their way to victory when Scott McTominay made it 3-1 after 75 minutes to give them a two-goal lead after the second time.
After Max Kilman pulled one shot, Pedro Neto equalized in the fifth minute of stoppage time. Amazingly, there was still time for Mainoo to score the decisive goal, starting a four-match winning streak for Ten Hag that would end in a 97th-minute home defeat by Fulham on 24 February.
More than 20 years after a Premier League side last came from three behind to win β Wolves at home to Leicester City in 2003 β Bournemouth repeated the trick at Luton, recovering from a 3-0 half-time deficit.
Dominic Solanke started the comeback five minutes after the break, Illia Zabarnyi added another in the 62nd minute and Antoine Semenyo in the 64th and 83rd minutes.

“When we score the first one, everyone starts to believe,” Cherries manager Andoni Iraola told Sky Sports. Luton would concede 85 goals on their way to relegation.
Reacting in style to Alexander Isak’s first goal for Newcastle in the sixth minute, West Ham equalized 15 minutes later through Michail Antonio and upset the mood at half-time among the home fans by taking the lead through Muhammed Kudus, whose goal after 54 minutes and two seconds was the second-last first half goal in Premier League history.
Those Toon fans may have wished they hadn’t reappeared in the second half when Jarrod Bowen put West Ham 3-1 up after 48 minutes, a lead they held until Isak converted his second spot-kick 13 minutes from time.
Newcastle’s introduction of Harvey Barnes midway through the second half ultimately proved crucial. Isak set up the winger for his first entry into the penalty area seven minutes from time, and his spectacular long-range winner in the 90th minute gave his side their first win after two goals down in five years.

In a whirlwind individual season, Cole Palmer scored two of his latest 10 Premier League goals to thwart Manchester United’s admirable comeback at Stamford Bridge.
Goals from Conor Gallagher and Palmer put the hosts 2-0 up after 19 minutes, and Alejandro Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes drew United level by the 39th minute, with Garnacho adding another after 23 minutes of regulation time.
It was nine minutes and 18 seconds into added time when Palmer scored a record-breaking ninth last-gasp goal with an equalizer that would have left most Chelsea fans satisfied with the result. His second, after 100 minutes 39 seconds, was the third last overall and the last ever to win a game.

After losing both of their opening games of the season without scoring, Everton satisfied the crowd at Goodison Park by scoring twice inside eight minutes through Michael Keane and Dominic Calvert-Lewin to establish a 2-0 lead over Bournemouth.
After Antoine Semeny’s 87th-minute reply and Lewis Cook’s 92nd-minute header equalized for Bournemouth, the Cherries had time for Marcus Tavernier and Semenyo to go close for the winner before Luis Sinisterra headed home Justin Kluivert’s 97th-minute cross.
The result extended Everton’s wait for a first win in August since 2021 to 11 games. There was more trouble in their next game, as they went 2-0 up and lost 3-2 to Aston Villa.
In a game between teams known for their dangerously high defensive lines, Tottenham looked well placed to follow up their 3-0 win at Manchester United with another away win after Brennan Johnson and James Maddison put them 2-0 up at halftime.
Brighton took the lead before their shortcomings were severely exposed in the 4-2 defeat by Chelsea eight days earlier, but The Seagulls showed their attacking fire this time and scored three times in 19 minutes after the break, starting with Yankuba Minteh in the 48th . minute strike.

Georginio Rutter and Danny Welbeck completed the comeback to leave Ange Postecoglou ashen-faced as he paced the pitch for the rest of the game. The away manager described his players’ performance as “unacceptable” and “probably” the worst of his tenure.
Southampton lost their previous two games against Leicester 9-1 on aggregate and Jamie Vardy took his record to eight goals and four assists in 19 league appearances against them.
First-half goals from Cameron Archer and Joe Arib looked to have put the Saints on course for revenge even after Facundo Buonanotte responded in the 64th minute.
Ryan Fraser’s dismissal 17 minutes from time was before the Foxes chased their opponents again. Vardy converted a penalty to equalize and Jordan Ayew’s 98th-minute winner was another nail in the coffin for Southampton manager Russell Martin’s stay at the club.

Another game where both teams came back, with Ipswich – looking for a first win of the season – perhaps scoring too early when Sam Szmodics and George Hirst put them 2-0 up after 31 minutes.
Yoane Wissa struck twice in three minutes to give Brentford an equalizer before half-time and Bryan Mbeum’s penalty six minutes after the break looked to have turned the game around until Liam Delap equalized four minutes from time.

Mbeumo was the 96th-minute hero as Brentford proved they could be a force after Ivan Toney’s exit, although manager Thomas Frank described himself as “irritated” afterwards. “They were by far the better team in the first 40 minutes,” he said of Town. “There was only one team on the pitch – one of our worst ever in the Premier League.”
It is an unfortunate reflection of Tottenham’s defense this season that they are the only team to suffer two defeats on this list and they have accumulated both within just over two months.
After a heavy 1-0 defeat at Bournemouth three days earlier, Tottenham capitalized on two Marco Cucurella errors to take a 2-0 lead after 19 minutes at home to Chelsea with goals from Solanke and Dejan Kulusevski.

Cucurella set up Jadon Sancho for a quick reply before two second-half Palmer penalties either side of Enzo Fernandez’s goal put Chelsea out of sight. Son Heung-min, who scored in added time, said afterwards that Spurs were in a “dark tunnel”.
In a match more memorable to Ruben Amorim than anyone watching, the Portuguese won his first Manchester derby with an Amado Diallo-inspired victory in hostile territory.
Josko Guardiola’s header gave out-of-form City a first-half lead, but Bruno Fernandes equalized two minutes from time with a penalty after Matheus Nunes fouled Amado, who scored United’s second from a tight angle in the 90th minute.

It was the last game that the reigning champions led in a Premier League match and lost. City also received an unwelcome reminder in a 3-3 draw at home to Feyenoord in the Champions League in October, when they led 3-0 with 27 minutes remaining before equalizing in the 89th minute.
