Thomas Tuchel praised the “natural confidence” of Myles Lewis-Skelly after scoring England on Friday in a 2-0 victory over Albania-Ali caused Marcus Rashford and Phil Foden to improve their performances.
The 18-year start of Tuchel’s mandate with a slit end to 20 minutes in his debut in England. The Arsenal defender continued to impress because England later found a second through Harry Kane in the game.
In an interview with the media after the game, Tuchel praised the courage of a teenager, who borrowed himself early in his career with his fast path.
“He’s such an open character,” Tuchel said.
“He was amazing in the camp. Full of confidence, full of humor. You see everything on the field, from the field. He does it with natural confidence. So play football. Full of courage and quality. He was determined and opened this game for us.”
Tuchel was also impressed with the versatility of Lewis-Skelly throughout the victory, explaining that the teenager was distributed as a tactical weapon during the game.
“Second half, he played as eight, we wanted to take more risks,” Tuchel said.
“The first half we played in the front 4-1 and 4-1. He played more conventional and achieved more in advance. He played as 8 or 10, I think his best position is where he plays for Arsenal in the left twice six, revealed roles.
“If you see him in the possession of the training games, the quality of the first touch, the body movement, how he plays passes, is very high understanding of the game. He is very versatile and can do a lot of things. Today we have tried to play more conventional because there are many players for different clubs.”
Marcus Rashford was a surprise to Tuchel’s first line of England, earning his first cap in England for over a year. Aston Villa, on loan from Manchester United, was joined by Phil Foden, who is fighting for a form at the club level.
The infertile evening of the Manchester City midfielder means that Foden failed to register a goal or assist in any of his last 17 appearances for his nation.
Asked about their performances after the game, Tuchel said: “Both of our wings were not as influential as they can usually be, as are otherwise in club football.
“I’m not sure why we struggled to bring them the ball faster, I’m not sure why we took so long. We missed a little running from the ball, and there is not enough passing and dribbling.
“It’s not enough to drive with a ball. It’s not aggressive enough to the goal. They were determined in training, so we chose them.”
At Foden, he added, “We will encourage him to do what he does best: Go to the defenders, go to dribbling.”
