If Google has developed an AI Gemini supporter The chatbot is expected to surpass the popularity of OpenAI’s ChatGPT in the coming years, it is expected to do so without other advertising partnerships that have helped Google search front and center in the lives of Americans.
In the federal US court on FridayGoogle has issued a series of restrictions that for three years prevent the company from requiring its device manufacturers, browsers, and wireless carrier licensees to distribute Gemini to US users. Google will also give those partners flexibility in how they set up search engines for their users.
Google’s proposal contradicts last month’s call from the US Department of Justice that Google not only stop working with, but also share data with, its competitors. quit its Chrome browser business. The company on Friday legally rejected the decision to sell any of its businesses or to offer more to competitors. And its proposed restrictions can be considered less than what the government wants.
The fight follows a ruling last August by US judge Amit Mehta in Washington, DC, which found that Google violated federal antitrust laws through agreements they became search engines for iOS and other apps often in exchange for sharing advertising revenue with their partners. The default settings helped Google find and engage users, making it a monopoly in search and search, Mehta found. The researcher was able to raise ad prices without restrictions, resulting in “significant revenue growth” and “sustainable operating profit,” Mehta wrote in his ruling.
Now, Mehta has to decide what penalties Google will face. He has scheduled hearings from April and is expected to issue his decision next August.
The emergence of ChatGPT, Gemini, and similar chatbots as competitors to traditional search engines has long been the subject of court cases. The Justice Department and many of the federal attorneys involved in the case want to ensure that Google is unable to move old-school search to the next generation.
But even after Mehta’s impending verdict, an appeal is expected to follow. It could take years for any restrictions on Google to take effect. This has left investors wondering about the prospects for Google and its parent company, Alphabet. Shares of the union will gain 37 percent in 2024, at a rate that is the eighth best annual performance since it was announced 20 years ago.
In this year’s test, Google said its search engine leadership is creating content that users love. The Department of Justice also said that users tend to default to their phones and browsers – usually Google. The company’s decision on Friday confirmed that Google does not want to lose all that. It could allow, for example, Google to protect the search engine feature on certain Samsung phone models in the US and temporarily suspend the rule for all to do so.
Google may also acquire a product to upgrade Gemini. There is nothing in Google’s mind that would prevent it from paying Samsung to promote Gemini on all of its devices. But according to the proposed restrictions, Google could not ask its partners to upgrade Gemini like they can distribute search, Chrome, or the Google Play store. And it can’t stop partners from working with rival AI companies like OpenAI.
