Elon Musk, America’s richest oligarch, tweeted his endorsement of Germany’s AfD party and many Germans are not happy about it. Why? Maybe it has something to do with AfD racism, xenophobia, and associated with neo-Nazis. You know, the usual stuff that Musk finds himself promoting here in 2024 as a top adviser to Donald Trump.
“Only the AfD can save Germany,” the billionaire he wrote early Friday morning.
Musk’s tweet was prompting another tweet from Naomi Seibt, a German climate change activist who has become known as the anti-Greta Thunberg. Seibt also promoted conspiracy theories and is accused of being anti-Semitic, according to a Guardianwhich he denies.
Germany’s far-right cheered Musk’s tweet, including Alice Weidel, who wants to become chancellor as the leader of the AfD in the upcoming elections in February, like Germany. DW home reports.
“Yes! You are right!” Weidel sent it to Musk. “Please review what I asked President Trump, how socialist Merkel has destroyed our country, how the Soviet European Union is destroying the nations (sic) economic backbone and dysfunctional Germany!”
Germany’s Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, its domestic law enforcement agency, has listed the AfD as a “terrorist group” and at least two German states have legalized it, according to DW.
But many other politicians in Germany were not happy, noting Musk’s meddling in German politics and his lack of intelligence, often expressed in late-night tweets. Alexander Throm, a politician from the Christian Democratic Union party, also joked about the difficulties of Musk’s knowledge while speaking to local media.
“I was a little surprised because we often hear that Elon Musk is a genius, but when I hear these comments, I have to be skeptical,” Throm told DW. “Changes can only be made by those who govern. And the AfD will not govern. Because no other party will form a government with them.”
Musk’s endorsement also has a big impact on the American public, as he is seen as the most powerful politician in the country. Musk has doubled his wealth this year as the world’s richest man and helped Donald Trump get elected by spending a quarter of a billion dollars on the Republican campaign in 2024.
Musk, who has a history of racist commentshe insists he only voted for a Republican at the first time in 2022, meaning they only voted for Democrats before that. But even if we take him at his word (he lies frequently, such as when he denied funding for President Trump’s campaign) he remains a major figure in Republican politics. And they are using that power right now.
Instead, Mr. Musk has promised to start primaries against Republicans who cross him, which is not dangerous because he still operates a political committee called America PAC. Musk has been supporting a campaign campaign to nominate Pete Hegseth for Secretary of Defense. Those sales were appreciated using pressure to Sen. Joni Ernst of Iowa who seemed likely to vote against Hegseth because of his record as a veteran who spoke publicly about his experiences with sexual assault. Hegseth has been charged being rapeda crime he denies. Ernst now seems to agree with Hegseth’s assertion.
Musk has been making waves in the legal world even before Trump took office on Jan. 20, 2025. The US House is currently trying to pass a bill to keep the government open at 12:01 a.m. before the time it would shut down most. public works, but Musk was known to have made two payments that were brought in on Thursday.
House Speaker Mike Johnson says he is preparing another version of the bill to be voted on Friday. But everyone keeps an eye on Musk’s X account, where he commands and organizes his army of lobbyists. If Musk gives the thumbs up, it looks like it will pass. If he says no, Trump will follow suit and we will find ourselves in a government shutdown in the middle of the busy holiday season.
We live in a very transparent oligarchy at this point. And Musk’s promotion of a far-right party like the AfD is not a great sign of what lies ahead.
