Association of police officers of Michigan, the Great Lakes state’s largest law enforcement group, endorsed Noem in a letter to Paul this month, lamenting that under the Biden administration, police have faced a job more difficult as illegal immigration moved north and rocked the state.

Noem has repeatedly deployed South Dakota National Guard troops to the southern Texas border to help curb illegal border crossings as part of Operation Lone Star.
“The border is a war zone, so we’re sending soldiers,” Noem said in a press release in February, marking the fifth deployment of National Guard troops to the border under the Biden administration. “The primary mission of these soldiers will be the construction of a wall to stem the flow of illegal immigrants, drug cartels and human trafficking into the United States of America.”
Fraternal Order of Police President Patrick Yoes wrote in his letter to Paul that his organization also looks forward to “working with (Noem) to secure our border.”

Noem has served as governor of the Mount Rushmore state since 2019, and notably gained national attention and praise from conservatives during the pandemic when she pushed back against lockdown orders and mask mandates common in liberal states such as California and New York. Prior to her term as governor, Noem served in the United States House from 2011 to 2019.
Noem was on Capitol Hill this month meeting with senators to rally support for his confirmation, including meeting with Paul.
