Instagram is still thought of as a feed for algorithmically delivered photos first, but the app is also very popular for messaging. If you want to take some of the worry out of remembering to send a birthday message to your friend, as part of the latest update, you can now edit Instagram messages premeditated. Scheduled messages may not contain media such as GIFs, images or videos, but you can schedule them up to 29 days in advance on both Android and iOS versions of the app.
What are Instagram DMs?
If you have been using Instagram as a place to store photos for your smartphone, you may have missed the launch of Instagram Direct back in 2013, a direct messaging system integrated into the Instagram app for sharing photos and videos with friends and family.
Meta has changed the look, location, and style of Instagram DMs over the years, and has been linked to them Messenger in 2020and a recent addition ability to share space in November 2024. The addition of scheduled messages brings Instagram a wide range of messaging tools such as iMessage and Gmail.
How to create an Instagram message
You can access DMs by clicking the arrow or bubble icon in the upper right corner of your feed. To edit a message, select an existing chat or create a new message by clicking the new icon in the upper right corner. Then type in the box with whatever you want to say, and click and hold the blue icon to the right of the box.
Instagram then pulls up a series of dials that you can use to set the date and time you want your message to be sent. When you’re happy, click the blue send button at the bottom of the menu and the message will be prepared.
How to delete a scheduled Instagram message
If you change your mind about a planned message, you can delete it directly from your chat. From within the chat, click on the small text that says “regular messages” above the text box. Then click and hold the message you want to delete. From the dropdown menu that appears, click “Delete” to delete the message.
How to edit a scheduled Instagram message
If you want to edit your message instead of deleting it, things get a little more complicated. It turned out to be possible edit common Instagram messages in March 2024, but it is not possible to change the planned message at this time. There is a way to get the same results if you want to do a little more, however.
First, open the chat with the message you want to edit. Then click on “edited messages” near the bottom of the screen above the text box. Find the message you want to edit, then tap and hold it. Click on “Remove” from the menu to copy your text to the sprayer, then repeat the process and get on “Remove.”
With your handwritten message, paste it into your existing chat box or a new message. Change the view, then click and hold the blue arrow to the right of the text box to reset the date and time you want. Click on the submit button at the bottom of the menu, and it will be processed.
