late John Cornyn, R-Texastold reporters he had a good meeting with President-elect Trump FBI Pick Kash Patelon Monday and said he was “certainly inclined to support it, barring some unforeseen circumstances.”
“We don’t know yet what are director wray’s plans are, but ultimately, I guess Mr. Patel will be confirmed as the next FBI director,” he said after the morning meeting.
According to Cornyn, he and Patel discussed “the importance of restoring the FBI’s reputation as a nonpartisan investigative and law enforcement agency.”

He noted that trust in the FBI eroded after former director James Comey’s handling of the investigation into former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.
“That was fundamentally wrong for the FBI director to do that, (announce) prosecutorial decisions that should have been made by the attorney general,” Cornyn said of Comey, who claimed “that no reasonable prosecutor would bring such a case”. against Clinton for her misuse of her email system.

“But of course that continued when James Comey was fired and then he goes (on) a payback tour to get a special counsel appointed against President Trump.”

The senator said, “No one should have to go through what President Trump went through at the hands of a partisan Department of Justice (DOJ) and FBI.”
“And my goal would be to restore the nonpartisan operation of the nation’s premier law enforcement agency, the FBI and the Department of Justice. To me, that’s the goal. Mr. Patel said that shares that goal,” Cornyn said.

Patel has been to the Capitol to meet with several senators and bolster support before Trump is inaugurated and officially makes his nominations. Other high-profile Trump picks for additional roles have similarly met with like-minded lawmakers.
