India’s veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin talked about a turning point at the beginning of his career. After India’s Test series loss to England at home in 2012, Ashwin vowed never to allow another series defeat at home again. This promise became the driving force in his career as he led India’s dominance

Speaking in a video dedicated to BCCI, Ashwin recalled the emotional moment that shaped his resolve. “Look, I don’t know where to start, honestly, I mean. I promised myself in 2012. We lost the series against Englandslyly. It was very early in my career and I was just telling myself that we would never lose another one and I promised myself that. How many wickets you took, how many hours you ran, in 10 years, you won’t remember them. Memories are important,” Ashwin said in a video released by the BCCI.

Ashwin vows never to let India lose home Test series

Under his influence, India won a world record 18 consecutive home Test series in the next 11 years. During this run, Ashwin played a pivotal role, taking 320 wickets in 53 home matches with incredible consistency.

Ashwin concluded his illustrious Test career as India’s second highest wicket-taker with 537 wickets in 106 matches. He scored more than 1500 runs, including three centuries with his impressive batting.

Reflecting on his journey, Ashwin expressed gratitude. “But if someone had told me in 2011 that I would get so many wickets, I would have retired in 2024 on December 18. I wouldn’t have believed them because I knew this was a game I loved, but I never expected to get so much love and so many wickets and so many runs. I am very glad, a deep sense of gratitude to everyone who supported me, to everyone who challenged me. So happy today. Thank you,” he added.

Notably, Ashwin won 11 Man of the Series awards, equaling Muttiah Muralitharan’s record in the history of Test cricket. His match-winning performances cemented his status as one of India’s greatest all-rounders of all time.
