Returning Doctor Who Russell T. Davies may have pioneered the modern era Doctor Who special holidays-Christmas animals, a great show, the occasional excess of Kylie Minogue-but it was doubtless that it was her successor, Steven Moffat, who nailed the perfect performance. Doctor Who Christmas story should be. The answer, ironically, is not a great sci-fi story – or at least, it’s not as important as the commitment, almost closing in on the romance of the season. This year’s offering, Moffat’s the first Christmas script since 2017’s 12th Doctor’s 2017’s “Twice Upon a Time,” he’s often excelled in a similar style with a fun time warp. Doctor Who a tour festooned with festive charm—one that really leans toward the sequel to help right a few wrongs in the past.
“Joy to the World,” which will be released next week on Christmas Day, has some similarities with Ncuti Gatwa who was the 15th doctor in last year’s holiday session“Church on Ruby Road,” so much so that it relies on a series of dramatic performances to try to hide when its story doesn’t hold together. It trades the whimsical child-absorbing faces for traditional sci-fi flavors as the Doctor settles into a holiday “Time Hotel”, providing a momentary gateway to Christmases throughout human history. It also leans burdensome for the beauty of the weather too, with lots of snow, tinsel, and trees, feeling more about the season and not just the past events that happen at the end of December.
Intrigued by the mystery of a strange suitcase that seems to be exchanged a lot among hotel receptionists, it’s in this. timely events-wimey– and through the aforementioned Time Hotel gates – through which the Doctor passes lonely Joy (Nicola Coughlan), while looking into a ruined hotel in London on Christmas 2024. The secret of why Joy is so important in the Doctor’s latest journey is placed next to “Joy to the World” as it is. takes part in observing the effects of Time Hotels portals, and the temporal paradoxes that come with them. It’s all Moffat-y, a mix of laughs, time-warping storytelling, and the necessary frustration that comes with being so successful as a writer, as the Doctor finds himself drawn into the life of a lonely woman on the road (Steph de Whalley’s Anita, perhaps secretly the breakout star of “Joy to the World”). He is a killer Doctor Who a story idea, which also cleverly touches on the Doctor’s later loneliness unlike Ruby. It just happens to be well placed by the weather inside someone Doctor Who a story that is… well, not given time to rest in something interesting.
“Joy to the World” makes up for the missteps with the legend of Joy by allowing the episode to be where it shines in the holiday season, with a long story about a powerful emotional drama. make sure it plays fast and loose with the basics, especially compared to the plot-within-a-plot the first half of the episode is dedicated to. It mostly works, thanks to Gatwa and Coughlan’s performances, and will resonate with those who are going through Christmas without their loved ones. But if you find yourself protected from Doctor WhoThe charm of sadness is disappointing at this time of year, you can find it all a little harmless – and you wonder what the story would have been like if it still had a plot within a plot as its main idea.
But even if you don’t find yourself involved in everything, there is still a great part. Doctor Who to be found in “Joy to the World,” although it is not really important to the story. There’s enough here to satisfy anyone looking for the best Doctor Who idea, or someone who just wants something big and Christmassy to inflame their hearts with the spirit of the season as they settle down for the festive season—and this time Doctor WhoA long history of holiday specials, we can still find stories that can make all the difference and a welcome little gift under our trees.
Doctor Who will return to Disney+ worldwide and on the BBC in the UK and Ireland on Christmas Day, December 25.
